Bones And All: The Ending Of The Film According To Taylor Russell

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Russell shared his thoughts on the film’s violent and shocking ending, explaining why it’s actually ” incredibly romantic ” and “very beautiful“.

The ending is incredibly romantic to me because it’s a gift that he gives her, knowing the picture of these two people, this affliction of theirs. It’s the most loving act in a way. And it’s always felt like that to me when we’ve talked about it, so I think it’s very cool. Very heartfelt. In their world, it’s the more romantic version“.

Let’s take a step back: when Russell’s character Maren is abandoned by her father due to her cannibalistic nature, she sets out to find her mother in hopes of finding answers to her animal urges. Along the way, Maren meets other cannibals, including the creepy old Sully, played by Mark Rylance, and the charismatic Lee, with whom he forms a romantic relationship. Unconventional as it is, this premise sets the stage for the perfect surprise ending to Guadagnino’s cannibal romance enactment. Just as Maren and Lee begin to put their stormy pasts behind them and manage to move away, the strange Sully reappears, who has a score to settle with Maren for leaving him only years before.

Just as Sully bursts into their apartment and begins threatening Maren, Lee arrives at her home and heroically saves her, only to be fatally stabbed in her chest in the process. On his deathbed, Lee asks Maren to eat him. Although she is initially hesitant and the ending of Bones and All does not explicitly show the cannibalistic act, it strongly implies that Maren respects Lee’s deathbed wish by consuming her body, “down to the bone”. For the two cannibal lovers, the surprise ending of Bones and All is the perfect conclusion to their story: as Russell explains, Lee allows Maren to “dine on his corpse“, which is of course shocking to the general public, but it is the most romantic gesture ever for the two cannibals.
