Blue Beetle: Critics Review and Reactions Out New DC Universe Cinecomic is Loudly Praised!

Blue Beetle caused quite a stir among critics, generating rave reviews ahead of its theatrical release. Many industry insiders have taken to Twitter to offer feedback on Blue Beetle, the film that tells the story of the new DCU’s first hero. Blue Beetle is DC’s newest hero and he’s ready to hit the big screen. The film, directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings, La Granja), as told by James Gunn himself, has no connection with the other existing projects in the DC universe. A week after the release of the cinecomic in international cinemas, the first online reactions of some spectators who have had the opportunity to see the film have been made available. The response? It seems that the new superhero can get away with the public.

It must be clarified that Jaime Reyes is not the first character to take Blue Beetle‘s place and that his character is quite different from his predecessors. For starters, the first Blue Beetle was introduced in 1939, by a police officer named Dan Garrett, who fought crime by gaining superpowers from ingesting 2X vitamin. Then, in 1964, a renewed version of the character was presented, when an archaeologist, also named Dan Garrett, extracted mystical properties from an ancient Egyptian scarab. By 1966, Ted Kord, a student of Garrett’s, carried on his legacy and fought crime (although he had no superpowers). It was not until 2006 that DC introduced Jaime Reyes as the Blue Beetle, with never-before-revealed details such as his alien origin. When Kord dies, the scarab gives Reyes powers and provides him with armor that helps him fight crime and uphold the legacy of his ancestors.

Although Blue Beetle is not yet in movie theaters, some lucky ones have already been able to see its premiere and for this reason, the first criticisms have begun to emerge. Among them, some point out that the film has very good action scenes, while for some others, there is an excess of humor in the tone. However, something in which several agree is that the new DC movie is very tender and has Latino culture as its main subject, a recent film trend that we have seen in other examples such as Spider-Man: through the Spider-Verse in Marvel, tape with which many fans of superheroes tend to compare Blue Beetle for the similarities between the two stories.

The main character of Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes, is of Latino origin, played by Xolo Maridueña, who we already saw before as Miguel Díaz in Cobra Kai, and who also has Mexican, Cuban and Ecuadorian ancestry, although he was already born in the United States. This is also a cast decision that shows the interest in placing Latino culture at the center of the new DC movie. At his side, other actors and actresses of Latin origin reinforce the proposal, such as Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Belissa Escobedo, all of Mexican origin or nationality. In addition to this attention to everything Latino, the early reviews of Blue Beetle also highlight the film’s ability to have internal references to Latino pop culture and the quality of the action sequences, as well as being very comical and light to watch.

The overarching narrative from critics is that the film was a gripping watch, with Steven Weintraub, of Collider, calling it “much better than expected” and a “hugely entertaining” effort, while The Hollywood Handle said the film boasts “a phenomenal cast with charismatic characters and an intriguing storyline”. Additionally, FilmSpeak’s Griffin Schiller called Blue Beetle a “huge win” for DC and an “electric introduction” to the live-action version of the DC character.

The early positive reviews mirror the encouraging social media reaction Blue Beetle received last April following the release of its first official trailer. The film sees Reyes and his Mexican American family as the central character, a recent Palmera City graduate, who is chosen to become a symbiotic host of the Scarab, an ancient alien relic that grants him powerful exoskeletal armor to transform him into the Blue Beetle. Although a superhero film, Blue Beetle is not about saving the world, according to director Angel Manuel Soto, it is more about the journey of the protagonist and his family.
