Blade Runner 2099: Here’s When The Amazon Series, Sequel To Denis Villeneuve’s Film, Will Go Into Production

As reported by Deadline, the Amazon series Blade Runner 2099 will go into production next April. Originally, filming on the series was supposed to start in the summer of 2023, but was blocked due to the strike of Hollywood actors and screenwriters. Jonathan van Tulleken, who directed the first two episodes of FX’s Shōgun series, will direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the show. The director will replace Jeremy Podeswa, who had to abandon the project due to a scheduling conflict. The Amazon series will be a sequel to Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner 2049, released in 2017 starring Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling. More details about the plot and characters who will appear in the series have not been revealed.

However, it seems that the series will be set 50 years after the events narrated in the film (which, in turn, was set 30 years after the original directed by Ridley Scott in 1982). The series will be executive produced by Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, and Clayton Krueger, along with Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, Isa Dick Hackett and Tom Spezialy. According to a new report, this new production will begin filming in the American fall, specifically in April, and has found one of its directors in Jonathan Van Tulleken. Among Van Tulleken ‘s most recent works is the samurai miniseries released by Hulu and FX, Shōgun.

Previously Jeremy Podeswa, known for directing several episodes of Game of Thrones, as well as some episodes of Station Eleven, had been hired for the position. However, as a result of scheduling conflicts, he was forced to abandon the project. Although it is close to the start of production, details surrounding the plot of Blade Runner 2099 are being kept secret. However, it was confirmed that this installment of the neo-noir science fiction franchise will be set 50 years after the last film sequel starring Ryan Gosling. Taking into account that the projects will be developed in different periods, everything indicates that new characters will be at the forefront of the franchise.

Another point in favor of the new Blade Runner series is that Ridley Scott, who directed the first film, will participate as executive producer, while Silka Luisa from the Halo series will be the writer, director, and executive producer of the project. Michael Green, one of the writers of the Villeneuve sequel, is also involved in the series as an executive producer but will not write the episodes of the new story. At the moment, Blade Runner 2099 does not have a defined release date.

Details about the plot are currently shrouded in mystery, with Prime Video preferring to keep secret what surprises the series will bring to viewers. However, what is certain is that Blade Runner 2099 will explore new aspects and mysteries of the film’s universe, probably introducing new characters and futuristic adventures. Ridley Scott’s involvement as executive producer promises to maintain consistency with the tone and visual style that made the first film a classic of the genre. Furthermore, the presence of Silka Luisa as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, along with Michael Green as executive producer, suggests that the series will be led by a talented team with a deep understanding of the universe.
