Expect a lot of twists and a beautiful flashback game which, perhaps, are the most beautiful elements of this series that are revealed a little at a time by adding pieces to its twisted plot always at the right time and continually leaving a veil of mystery that tickles the viewer’s curiosity. Sweet and hard at the same time, sentimental and icy, full of action but also extremely reflective, Black Doves is the perfect series for those who love thrillers and those who love to be passionate about realistic stories about the complexity of human relationships. The very first thing that catches Black Doves, in addition to the initial and central intrigue of the story, is precisely its protagonists and the care with which they are characterized and refined by each other. The faces of an easily recognizable cast immediately leave room for everyone’s intrigues and dilemmas, emphasizing not only their specific roles and talents, but also that particular human component that evolves hand in hand with a British touch always present, perfectly consistent with current events, but also unique and distinctive in some way.
Black Doves stage the darkest part of a metropolis mythologized for centuries, enhancing its folds through geometric and elegant formal choices. In the contrast between a London perfectly arrogant and aware of its beauty and the monsters that inhabit it every day, part of the fascination of a serial product is revealed which is striking precisely in the combination of good and evil, right and wrong, lawful and illicit. Everything, as already mentioned above, starts from a series of murders that immediately establish the spirit of the narrative, and then moves on to the consequences and an investigation conducted by a spy and an assassin. Once again, the game of opposites emerges, or in any case of distant and different worlds, but somehow close. The common point? Death, perhaps inflicted in situations that justify it or for purely professional purposes.
So Black Doves takes us into the life of a spy who built his current existence using lies and masks that allowed her to get what she needed, to the detriment of herself and her actual identity, now “placed” who knows where in the hands of who knows who. In a narrative process of this kind, Keira Knightley is immediately convincing, presenting herself as a woman in the middle, a human being fragmented into many small pieces impossible to decipher completely, but fragile, in some way, and any case credible and not stereotyped. The same goes for the path faced by Ben Whishaw’s Sam: a dark and tormented man, but also endowed with a sharp irony, broken by events that have marked him in the past. Again, Black Doves return attention to “before” and “present”, going beyond the roles shown on the screen. Once again, interest in what is hidden behind the mask emerges, as a function of a deeper understanding that could even lead to empathy.
In the unpredictable chaos of explosions, betrayals, fights, and a constant danger always around the corner, Black Doves constantly tries to emphasize the imperfections of its protagonists, professionals of violence and death, but also individuals with hidden frailties. Thus, the stereotypical force of a story that seems to promise familiar narrative elements is subverted by the hesitation of two protagonists with whom it is easy to tune in, ready to question even in the most complex situations. From this arises all the aforementioned themes, in a game in which everything is constantly exchanged and in which the violence of a larger and more mysterious plan comes into contact with a writing capable of conquering thanks to its twists and characters of the whole unexpected that enrich the story without completely overlying it. Between difficult moments, dramas, doubts, and clashes to death, the story of Black Doves develops an elegant spy story but also and above all humanly ruthless and unexpected.
At first glance, Black Doves has everything you are looking for in a spy story: a compelling story, well-choreographed action scenes, pungent dialogues placed in the right places, and a charismatic duo that keeps the story upright even in the most peaceful moments, although there aren’t many. What conquers the series is the way it exits the classic tracks. The entire season is set during the Christmas period when decorated trees, lights, and Christmas songs hover in the air; an atmosphere that hardly marries with an action series, but in Black Doves these two worlds find their perfect meeting point. The references to Christmas, especially the scenographic ones, manage to give history even more character and personality. In the same way, the different narrative levels work and the structure which, slowly, is getting closer and closer to a dramatic series.
But the real gem of Black Doves is certainly the characters. The duo of protagonists has everything you could wish for. Keira Knightley gives an excellent interpretation of a protagonist with the classic contours of a story, an agent whose convictions fail when the sense of revenge becomes his only priority. From this moment his life, built without ever committing a misstep, falls like a house of cards. Helen is also the perfect protagonist alone, but it is with Sam that Black Doves takes on further depth. Sam has an equally classic story, but a more fascinating pinch. An assassin with a precise moral code who dreams of a normal life and an agent with a secret past to whom life with a man who does not like begins to go close represent an excellent duo in which the theme of friendship, central in the TV series, finds fertile ground also thanks to the alchemy between the two protagonists.
A relationship that is central in the first half of the season, but that is lost in the final episodes when others are introduced as secondary characters. While some are interesting and add something to the story – Jason himself, the focal point around which the story revolves, but above all Michael, Sam’s ex-boyfriend -; others simply serve to remark the same messages that Helen and Sam communicate for the whole season with the difference that they act as comic lines. Although one of the characteristics of Black Doves is precisely the exquisitely British humor, in recent episodes, English humor tends more to embrace a pure and simple comedy, almost out of place given the tones of the series. A smudge that does not affect a product that, as a whole, is enjoyable and well done. What sets Black Doves apart from other such products is its ability to easily mix various narrative registers. Masterfully choreographed action scenes alternate with moments of intimacy, while the tone passes from the tension of the thriller to interludes from brilliant comedy.
This stylistic fluidity, supported by careful direction and a well-balanced script, keeps the viewer’s attention high and allows the series to explore different emotional nuances. In particular, Barton’s ability to play with the spectator’s expectations — passing, for example, from a shooting to a passionate kiss without the narrative rhythm being affected — demonstrates a mastery of the medium that is not a little. In terms of the political context, Black Doves is less incisive than other such productions such as The Diplomat. The secondary plot linked to international intrigues and government corruption is sometimes explored with too much superficiality, with stereotypical American characters and subplots that would have deserved greater development. However, these defects do not compromise the overall charm of the series, which focuses entirely on the human dynamics of the protagonists and their emotional journey.
With a tense and satisfying ending, Black Doves not only worthily ends its first season, but lays a solid foundation for an already announced following. The series has the merit of leaving several narrative possibilities open without sacrificing the coherence of the main story. It is clear how Netflix found a winning couple in Knightley and Whishaw, capable of bringing both adrenaline and emotion to the screen. If the second season maintains the same quality level, Black Doves could become one of the most popular series of the contemporary espionage genre. With its fusion of action, heart, and humor, Black Doves is not only a compelling thriller, but also an investigation into the nature of the human being and the weight of his choices. A vision recommended for those seeking adrenaline, but also emotional depth: as we said, we hope that even those who do not usually appreciate this kind of story will approach it because we are sure they will find something that goes far beyond the “usual” espionage thriller.
