Black Doves Season 1 Ending Explained: Who Murdered Jason and What Happened to Helen?

The six-episode series begins with Jason, a public official, Maggie Jones (Hannah Khalique-Brown), a jewelry assistant, and Phillip Bray (Thomas Coombes), a journalist, having a group call and being killed almost at the same time. For the authorities, the three homicides are not related, however, Helen knows that yes, so, she begins to investigate. To ensure Helen’s protection and discover the truth, Reed (Sarah Lancashire), the head of the Black Doves, a spy organization that sells information to the highest bidder, hires Sam Young (Ben Whishaw), a hitman and old friend of the protagonist. How Did Helen Become a Spy for Black Doves?

In 2014, Daisy/Helen showed up for a job interview for a translator position but was rejected due to her family’s past. Daisy’s stepsister Bonnie Weir is serving a life sentence in prison for the murder of her father, and she left the country after the incident. However, they send her with Reed to be part of the organization she runs. Her first mission is to establish contact with politician Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), who later becomes Minister of Defense, her husband, and the father of her twins. Sam works with her, who decided to become a hitman for Lenny Lines. Despite everything, Sam led a pleasant life with her boyfriend Michael, until he made a mistake.

Although his first commission was to assassinate his father and he complied, Sam could not do the same when he was commissioned to kill the Newman brothers, powerful traffickers, since he left the minor alive, Hector, because at that time it was a boy. Thanks to that, the Newmans chased him and forced him to abandon Michael. Lenny demands that he pay off his debt and uses hitmen Williams and Eleanor to pressure him. As Black Doves progresses, Helen gets closer and closer to the truth. After escaping the Elmore Fitch trap, the sniper who killed Jason murders him when he invades his home. New clues lead him to Commissioner Stephen Yarrick, however, he soon understands that more powerful and dangerous people are behind it all. The same ones that murder Yarrick. Meanwhile, Wallace Webb is dealing with the death of Chinese Ambassador Chen (Andy Cheung). While the British claim that he died of an overdose, the Chinese government denounces a murder committed by a US agent. Furthermore, the young Kai-Ming Chen (Isabella Wei) is missing.

What About Helen and Jason?

Helen discovers that her lover Jason was not just a public employee, but an MI5 undercover agent sent to investigate her. However, Jason fell in love with her and decided not to report her discovery. Their relationship, albeit brief, was real and sincere but ended abruptly when Jason was killed by a hitman hired by Trent Clark, a member of a powerful British criminal clan, known as The Clark. At the climax of the series, Helen confronts Trent in a confrontation full of tension and revenge. Although she is determined to kill him, her friend Sam, a professional killer with a code of ethics, steps in, eliminating Trent and his mother, Alex Clark, to protect Helen from becoming a murderer. Trent and Alex’s death closes the circle of revenge but leaves Helen emotionally marked.

Who Murdered Jason?

After reaching Cole Atwood, Kai-Ming’s boyfriend, and CIA agent accused of killing the Chinese ambassador, Helen is ready to hand him over to Reed but discovers that he did not tell the whole truth and decides to take the subject with Sam’s help. Cole reveals that those behind all the chaos are the Clarks, a clan led by London mob boss Alex (Tracey Ullman). At that point, Williams and Eleanor are part of the “team”, as they join Sam in rescuing Kai-Ming from the hands of Hector Newman. During an attack by the Clarks, the ambassador’s daughter and Eleanor are kidnapped. The rest take refuge in Michael’s house. Sam receives instructions from Reed and goes to murder Alex; Cole takes advantage of a distraction to escape; and Helen confronts Dani, Wallace’s assistant and a spy for the Black Doves. How is the Political Conflict Resolved?

Helen finds the recording device and uses it to negotiate with Alex. Along with Williams, they head to rescue Kai-Ming, Eleanor, and Sam. Thanks to a call, Helen discovers that Trent is to blame and threatens to kill him. A shooting occurs and Sam decides to do the job to protect his friend. He shoots Alex and Trent, and they become the Clark’s target. Cole also survives the attack and Helen hands him the recording of Ambassador Chen’s death to show to the Chinese and end the war threat. The complicity of Yarrick and other officials is revealed, putting Wallace close to becoming the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Who is Jason Really?

Jason was an MI5 agent in charge of seeking government leaks. So, he approached Helen Webb. However, before dying, he sent a report claiming that Helen was not a spy. Reed gives him all the information about Jason, but Helen decides not to review it and keeps what she knows and loves about him. On the other hand, Sam says goodbye to Michael so as not to expose him to the Clark fury, he also says goodbye to Lenny. Additionally, Kai-Ming joins Eleanor and Williams. What About Helen in the End?

Helen decides not to dig into Jason’s past life anymore, choosing to keep in his memory the man she met and loved.
