The film begins when Kate, a working class dancer, obtains a scholarship to a prestigious ballet academy in Paris, France. With her sportswear and Converse, she stood out and almost immediately attracted the ire of the star Marine.
Marine is back after the tragic death of her twin brother, and she and Kate both have their eyes set on their school’s prize: A contract with the Opéra national de Paris. What starts off as an intense rivalry turns into something far more twisted as Marine and Kate grow closer, especially after they vow to win the prize together. Ending Explained Who Wins the Grand Prize?
The day of the final competition arrives, and Kate finds herself teaming up with Felipe, the best dancer in the class, which gives her a good chance of winning. Marine, initially paired with Felipe, decides to perform on her own, an unorthodox decision that surprises everyone. Kate’s performance is impeccable and earns her a standing ovation, while Marine’s is experimental and provocative, leaving the audience speechless. At the end of Birds Of Paradise, while awaiting the announcement of the winners, Marine announces that she does not want the prize, leaving Kate to receive the coveted contract.
The end of Birds Of Paradise takes place three years later, and Kate is a famous ballet dancer. After a performance that earned her a standing ovation, she was approached by Marine, who choreographed dances at “Jungle”, the underground club they attended when they were ballet students. Kate eventually breaks down and apologizes to Marine for the way she treated her, and the film ends with Marine overseeing a surreal dance performance at the Jungle, based on a story Kate told her during their first meeting.
The finale of the film is fitting because it is truly impossible to choose between Kate and Marine which one deserves the award the most. As a result, Kate ultimately gets the prize, but it’s not a complete victory as her biggest competitor, Marine, pulls out of the race. It is also poetic that Kate, who ultimately “won”, appears to be unhappy when the two reunite three years later. On the other hand, Marine seems to have finally shed her constant bitterness after leaving the academy. She now seems free and indulges her passion for experimental dance in an underground club.
Ollie’s Death
Ollie’s tragic death determines Marine’s character for most of the movie, and halfway through the movie we find that she blames herself for her death as well. Marine’s mother apparently caught Marine and Ollie in a bedroom as a teenager, having sex, after which the young boy was so ashamed he started using drugs and ended up jumping of a bridge.
However, as Marine tearfully reveals to Kate, the day Ollie committed suicide, he tried to call her, but Marine did not pick up. In the voicemail he left her, Ollie hinted that she forgot about their pact. This weighs heavily on Marine and that is also why she blames herself for her death. It’s still unclear what happened between Ollie and Marine, but she clearly carries the guilt of her death with her. However, the dancer eventually manages to break out of the pain cycle. She achieves this by abandoning traditional ballet.
