Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 review: The current year is of horror comedy. After the success of Shaitaan, Munjya, and Stree 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has arrived. This horror comedy genre film is message-filled this time and the film has also got the support of the original Manjulika i.e. Vidya Balan. Not only this, but Madhuri Dixit also joins the film even after the interval, and the story which was boring till the interval becomes interesting only after the interval and in the end, the climax of the film makes you emotional as well as surprises you. This film can be watched once for these two actresses. I saw a film named ‘Leela – Ek Paheli’ many years ago. It was a love story set in the backdrop of reincarnation. The climax of this film had blown my mind. That day I understood the meaning of ‘Mother of Twists’. ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3‘ also tries to do something similar. But the foundation of this film is not strong enough to build that climax. ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3‘ is the weakest film of its franchise.
But its climax is better and more unexpected than all three parts. It can also be seen that this film takes the debate that ‘Stree’ gave birth to, one step forward. This is the only victory of ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3‘. First of all, it is important to say that ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3‘ is a spiritual sequel. That means the stories of all three films are not connected. But the names of some characters have been used from the previous films. Anyway, the story of the third installment begins in Calcutta. Here is a fake baba named Ruhaan alias Rooh Baba, who claims to drive away ghosts. He knows that he is a liar. Those who use his service also know that he is a fake baba. In such a situation, one day a princess named Meera takes him to her village Raktghat. Meera’s family members feel that a ghost named Manjulika is imprisoned in their mansion. That is why they are neither able to live in the mansion nor sell it. But Meera does not believe in ghosts. That is why she takes a fake baby to drive away the fake ghost. After going there, the story keeps moving here and there. And the main plot of the film keeps waiting the whole time. After two and a quarter hours of fun, the climax of the film arrives, which turns out to be almost different from the entire film.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 Review: The Story Plot
Now let’s come to the story of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3… Rooh Baba (Kartik Aryan) has once again come to free the world from ghosts, meaning he is doing a good job of acting as if he is driving away ghosts by doing fraud. His business is going great, he scares people, gives a little reference to ghosts, and earns a lot of money. But then Meera (Tripti Dimri) comes into Rooh’s life and his life becomes Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Meera belongs to a royal family; her father is a Maharaja himself. Now Meera takes Rooh to a mansion, she is told that she has been reborn. She has nothing to do, just has to kill Manjulika‘s ghost. Now she has got the responsibility of killing, so a priest of the royal family (Manish Wadhwa) is also present. Now after watching the trailer, it is already known that two Manjulikas are seen – one is Madhuri Dixit and the other is Vidya Balan. In such a situation, Rooh’s responsibility has increased, first, she has to identify who the real Manjulika is, and then she has to make arrangements to kill her.
Now who is the real Manjulika, what is the story of Meera’s royal family, how will Rooh complete his mission… many such questions and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 will give you answers in 2 hours and 40 minutes. The story begins in a kingdom named Raktoghat in ancient Bengal. The royal court is in session there. The song ‘Ami Je Tomar’ plays in the background. A woman keeps dancing to this song. Then the king comes with his bodyguards and burns the woman alive. The present story begins exactly 200 years later. Rooh Baba (Kartik Aryan) along with one of his friends’ cheats people in the name of getting rid of ghosts. Then he meets Meera (Tripti Dimri). Meera takes Rooh Baba to Raktoghat by luring him with money. When Rooh Baba reaches the palace, he gets to know new secrets. He finds out that the palace is haunted by the spirit of a witch named Manjulika. She wants to take revenge for her death. Then Mallika (Vidya Balan) and Mandira (Madhuri Dixit) enter. Both of their activities are similar to Manjulika‘s. They both start chasing Ruhaan i.e. Rooh Baba. They feel that it was because of Ruhaan that Manjulika was killed in her previous life. However, in the end, a big secret is revealed, which changes the whole story. Now to know this secret you will have to watch the film.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 Review and Analysis
Before we do the post-mortem of this film, we want to know the answer to one question – for whom are Bollywood makers making films these days, for the audience of Mumbai’s Bandra and South Delhi, or the entire Hindi belt? The question is because this year we have seen Alia Bhatt’s Jigra flop. There was probably not much flaw in the film, but the whole problem was with the target audience. The small section for which the film was made, and watched, the film could earn only that much money. The thing is the same – when Bollywood’s identity is entertainment, entertainment, and entertainment… then the films should also be like that. The more masala you serve, the more your audience will grow. Anees Bazmee has caught this pulse very well, in one word, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is a film with ‘too much spice’. Such a film can be made only when the makers get rid of the ghost of copying Hollywood, they become carefree, and they aim to make a film only for their audience. It becomes necessary to mention the writer of the film, Akash Kaushik, because a good blend of horror-comedy has been seen in the story.
If Akash had gone to justify the name of the film, then he would have easily made this story like ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa‘, so twisted that it would have gone over the heads of many people. But no, they have understood Anees’ vision very well, there are twists in the story, but they have been placed in such a way that people of every class can easily understand them. There is suspense, but there is no need to think too much. The first half of the film itself sets the atmosphere, we will not reveal much, but it definitely seems that we are going to enter a grand world of ghosts. The makers have to be given full credit for creating such an atmosphere. By the second half, we will be completely invested in the story and then there will be the world of spirits, the world of Manjulika, our world. Yes, the length of the film is really long, one has to admit that a song has been added unnecessarily on top of this some scenes are too stretched, but when it comes to catering to the mass audience, such mistakes can be forgiven, we are doing it.
Mistakes are forgiven because our favorite stars have done a great job. The soul of Rooh Baba is so deeply embedded in Kartik Aaryan that he dominates the screen. In some scenes, it seems as if he is mimicking Akshay Kumar, but that touch is nice. Bringing Tripti Dimri in the film will be considered the right decision, the actress who has become a national crush after Animal has a strong fan following, so half the people were eager to see her chemistry with Kartik. Her work looks fine in the film, there can be said to be scope for improvement. Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit have worked to give a new flavor to this film. Vidya has made a comeback, while Madhuri has made a mark as the X factor. The work of both these actresses in the film is good, on top of that their expressions in the horror scenes give you goosebumps. A dance-off of both of them has also been shown in the film, it is total number one, and you will not be able to take your eyes off the screen.
Rajpal Yadav’s return as Chote Pandit is also quite fun. This time his screen presence has been kept a little less, but for as long as he appears, there is a smile on the faces of the audience. Along with him, Sanjay Mishra as Bade Pandit and Ashwini Kalesar as Panditain have done justice to their roles. Among the co-stars, the work of Vijay Raj, Rajesh Sharma, and Manish Wadhwa also seems right for the film. Vijay Raj’s comic timing also makes you laugh. The story is good, but the screenplay is scattered. Director Anees Bazmee has failed to show the story on screen as it has been written. The first half is spent setting up the premises. After the interval, the story definitely takes an interesting turn. Vidya Balan, the first Manjulika of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise, has been completely wasted. Even a veteran actress like Madhuri Dixit could have been given a better performance. While watching the film, one wonders why her character was included at all.
Tripti Dimri i.e. Meera’s dress does not suit the story and character of the film at all. More focus has been given to making her look unnecessarily glamorous. Vijay Raj, Sanjay Mishra, and Rajpal Yadav have not been given good dialogues. The most positive point of the film is its climax. The director has succeeded in keeping the audience engaged in the last few scenes. The first half of the film is weak. A little too much time has been taken to establish the story and characters. At times, it even starts testing your patience. In the second half, the story picks up pace and returns to the track of entertainment. The twists and drama in the last thirty minutes of the film shake your mind in such a way that you are not disappointed with the film in the end. There is no doubt that the film has not been able to answer some questions, but it is wise not to think too much while watching the film. The director of the film is Anees Bazmee, who is known for his comedy films, but the comedy in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has not been able to settle down.
Many dialogues seem to be trying to force laughter. The cinematography of the film does justice to the subject. VFX enhances the horror element. Talking about the music of the film, except for the songs Aami Je Tomar and Hare Rama Hare Krishna, the new music of the film does not appeal. Kartik Aaryan has appeared in the familiar style of Rooh Baba. He has been excellent in the climax of the film. This cannot be denied. Vidya Balan is a great actress. Her specialty has been to assimilate characters. She played Manjulika earlier as well. This time, despite the weak story, she has filled the film with a different color with her acting. Madhuri Dixit has also given support to the film with her mature acting. Seeing her on the big screen in grey shades is a different experience. The dance face of both the actresses is one of the highlights of the film. Tripti Dimri has been seen in films for some time now only to dance and romance with the hero. She did not have anything special to do in this film as well. The rest of the characters do justice to the film, but the presence of Sanjay Mishra and Rajpal Yadav has not been able to do anything memorable this time.
The film’s director Anees Bazmee has played his part in making this Diwali Dhamaka a blockbuster. Only a few jokes are flat, and the film is a bit stretched, but everything else seems on point. The entertainment goal with which Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has been made seems to be achieved, so Anees will get full marks for this. Here it has to be said that Anees Bazmee has received excellent support from two people in his team: Tanishk Bagchi who gave background music and the other is production designer Rajat Poddar. The background score of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is its USP, the music of Hare Ram, and the music of Manjulika’s dance, due to this many scenes have been elevated a lot. The kind of set that has been placed on top of this, that mansion, and the small elements there, all worked to create horror, so Rajat should definitely be praised.
At no point does ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3‘ try to do anything that hasn’t been done before. And we are not saying this in the context of Indian or Hindi cinema. We are talking about this franchise. The same old scare cuts are still going on. Same old jokes. ‘Aami je tomar’ in new packaging and Kartik Aaryan imitating Akshay. All these elements together make the tired screenplay even more tiresome. It seems that many scenes have been brought together and added in one place. Because whatever is happening, has a lot of distance from the real story. At one point, suddenly a spoof of Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Jawaan’ is created in the film. Which has nothing to do with this entire story, film, or characters. Just laugh somehow.
The best thing about ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’ is its visuals. Which are more spectacular than the previous films. Beautiful camerawork and good quality VFX. But these visuals never become a part of the storytelling. That is, there is no attempt to say anything through the visuals. They only enhance the beauty of the film. Neither the music nor the background score of the film adds anything to the story. ‘Aami Je Tomar’ is the trademark song of this franchise. Which used to take the story of the film forward before now. But here it has been used only as an extra song so that there can be a dance face-off between Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit.
Whatever the film ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’ turned out to be, I would not like to blame Kartik Aaryan for it at all. Because we have seen in ‘Chandu Champion’ that if the director pushes him, he can give a strong performance. However, in most parts of this film, his dialogue delivery seems like Akshay Kumar. In the last part, Kartik gets a chance to perform. And he invokes the actor within him in the character of Devendranath. But it seems that the director does not trust his acting. Therefore, his performance is hidden with VFX. It seems that the makers of ‘Bhoot Bhulaiyaa 3’ first thought of the climax of the film. They wanted to say something meaningful through their film. But perhaps they were not confident about how the public would react to this thing. Because they felt that the public did not expect such sensitive things from them. That is why they covered that climax with a lot of garbage. That is the only thing that stands out in the film. And it also has some emotional depth.
However, bringing such a twist to a horror-comedy film seems a bit desperate. The same issue of confidence. Either the makers were not confident about their horror and comedy. They felt that something should be added to the film, which would give it weight. So they added something completely different to the film. Well, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’ proves to be a very weak film in terms of performance as well. Apart from Kartik, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav, Sanjay Mishra, and Ashwini Kalsekar also have nothing to do here. They are in this film because they were also a part of the previous films of this franchise. Actors like Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit go overboard. However, in the end, they get a chance to redeem themselves. But it is a case of too little too late.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 Review: The Last Words
This part is weaker than the previous two films. However, the film does pick up pace in some places. It also makes you laugh a lot in some places. In some scenes, you might even be forced to hold your stomach. If you have a lot of time this Diwali and are fond of horror comedy films, then Bhool Bhulaiyaa-3 is a one-time watch. Especially the teenage group may like this film more. Also, Kartik Aryan is quite popular, so this can be a good treat for his fans. Rest, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’ seems to be making a mockery of Priyadarshan’s ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ legacy rather than carrying it forward. This film may become a big success at the box office. But it will never be remembered as a good film.
