Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 Critics Review: Priyadarshan’s psychological thriller Bhool Bhulaiyaa, released in 2007, is considered a film ahead of its time. The Bollywood horror-comedy genre was probably not that familiar at that time. This is the reason why this experiment of novelty created history and today the maze is included in the list of cult films. After almost 15 years, the film’s franchise has come with a new story, new director and new star cast among the Bhool-Bhulaiya 2 fans. Yes, it would not be right to compare this film with the old one. The feel of the film is the same but the story is completely new.

Director Anees Bazmee is in top form. He has the viewers’ attention right from the first frame and even in portions when the drama dips, he does not let his grip on their minds loosen for too long. He has made a wholesome entertainer for males and females of all classes and age groups. On the whole, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is a very enjoyable entertainer and will prove to be a richly rewarding experience for all concerned.

All said and done, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is the answer to the much-hyped hatred towards Hindi cinema, for it’ll prove how any film could work if it does one thing right – entertain!

The biggest laughs come from the kind of slight swipes that you wouldn’t expect in a Bazmee film. A pandit calling out for customers pleading “achche din aane wale hain”; and later, while running up and down the haveli in one of those headless-chicken searches, throwing in: “Hum leke rahenge”. He stops, right there, but everyone gets the joke. If only the film got it: less is more.

‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ is an agglomeration of grief and the grieving, a desi (more gleeful) answer to the old adage that life is, indeed, ‘the biggest tragedy’ of all—which navigates black magic and prods along an even darker subject: human nature—and it sticks for the most part, and the bits that don’t, they must be lost in the labyrinth that is life.

Overall, the Anees Baazmee directorial is an entertaining watch for sure. However, it would be great if we not get into comparison with its prequel, which we must not forget, was also an adaptation.

On the flip side, BB2 struggles to stay cohesive and hold your attention. The writing is uneven and the small moments between characters often get lost in the jarring background score and jazzy special effects. Logic and reason have no space in the movie, which has superstition and black magic at their epicentre. Also, this is not a kid-friendly movie. The scenes depicting black magic and witchcraft are quite gory and disturbing. Another USP of the original, that was missing from the new flashy version, is the soundtrack. The songs barely register, and Mere Dholna 2.0 doesn’t hold a candle to the original.

But Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is a silly scary movie that knows it is a silly scary movie. This sort-of spin-off by Director Anees Bazmee wisely never suggests it has a singular smart bone in its body. What Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 highlights best is Tabu’s delight in being an actress. We’ve seen umpteen movies capturing her talent, but here we see the enjoyment she seeks from her profession.

Aakash Kaushik’s story is excellent and unconventional. It neatly incorporates the horror and comic quotient very well. On the whole, BHOOL BHULAIYAA 2 is a complete entertainer and works due to the splendid combo of horror and comedy. At the box office, it is all set to take a flying start and will emerge as a super hit. It can also emerge as Kartik Aaryan’s second Rs. 100 crore grosser. Recommended!
