Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura: Everything About Netflix’s Two Flagship Anime
The Baki series, published in Akita Shoten’s “Weekly Shonen Champion”, is a hugely successful martial arts manga that has sold over 85 million copies. Baki tells the stories of various fighters and revolves around the epic fight to the death between the protagonist Baki Hanma, the youngest underground fighting champion, and his father Yujiro Hanma, the “strongest creature on earth”. The manga inspired the Netflix anime series Baki Hanma. The Kengan Ashura manga is extremely popular and undoubtedly remains the most popular comic among users of the Ura Sunday website and the MangaONE app. The humble employee Kazuo Yamashita meets the mysterious martial arts fighter Ohma Tokita and becomes involved in “Kengan” matches, through which some corporations settle accounts by betting large sums of money on expert fighters. Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura: The Plot

The Shonen manga entitled Baki the Grappler written and illustrated by Keisuke Itagaki was published from 1991 to 1999 in the Japanese magazine Weekly Shonen Champion. Five sequels were subsequently created, including Baki Hanma which was serialized from 2005 to 2012 in the same magazine. The manga has also had anime transpositions including the adaptation of Baki Hanma distributed in 2021 with a first season of 12 episodes and followed by a second of 27. The story of Baki Hanma focuses on the young protagonist from whom the manga takes its title series, who through extreme challenges and opponents of all kinds strives to become a skilled martial arts expert.
Kengan Ashura is a manga always aimed at shonen and at the same time spokon like Baki. Written by Yabako Sandrovich and illustrated by Daromeon, Kengan Ashura was serialized in the Japanese magazine Ura Sunday from 2012 to 2018. The anime adaptation of the same name was released in 2019 with a two-part first season consisting of 24 episodes each. While the first part of the second season, again consisting of 12 episodes, was distributed in September 2023. The plot of Kengan Ashura also focuses on martial arts-related combat, with clandestine fights and betting rings. A reckless adventure in which the protagonist Ohma Tokita alias Kengan Ashura also finds himself involved, through the dangerous Kengan tournament from which his battle nickname derives.
