Bachchan Pandey Critics Review: By Taran Adarsh, Anupama Chopra, Komal Nahta, Joginder Tujeja
Akshay Kumar-Kriti Sanon’s most awaited film Bachchan Pandey was released in theaters on Friday (March 18, 2022) on the occasion of Holi. While fans are praising Akshay’s gangster avatar and swag, the film is also facing protests on social media. By the way, the biggest obstacle in the path of Bachchan Pandey is Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files, which has been continuously making records at the box office. Despite this, Akshay Kumar’s film has started well.

Soaked in non-stop entertainment… #AkshayKumar is outstanding in action, massy role… Aimed at those looking for hardcore entertainment… Has ample clap-and-whistle moments for masses. While #AkshayKumar dominates #BachchhanPaandey from Scene A to Z, #KritiSanon delivers a striking performance… #ArshadWarsi has his moments too… Fast-paced, engrossing first half, decent second hour, picks up again in pre-climax.

The story has a novelty factor and, therefore, arouses the audience’s interest. The screenplay is laced with entertainment and fun but in the process, it often meanders here and there. Consequently, the drama takes too long to come to the point. Even after it does, there’s no consistency in the comedy. Resultantly, while the viewers laugh at places, they also get bored at some points. On the whole, Bachchhan Paandey is an average fare with a weak climax. Its business will be adversely affected due to the huge opposition of last week’s The Kashmir Files (which is still going great guns at the ticket windows) and next week’s huge release, RRR.

In 2014, writer-director Karthik Subbaraj gave us the fabulously inventive, superbly funny, genre-melding Jigarthanda – a film about an aspiring director who gets embroiled in the life of a dangerous Madurai gangster named Assault Sethu, who he wants to make a film about. It has taken eight years for the story to find its way to Hindi cinema, which is just as well because Bollywood has mangled it beyond recognition. Bachchhan Paandey is a loud, joyless bore.

Bachchhan Paandey is about the making of a film but it provides a two-and-a-half-hour demo on how not to make a film. There is a film within the film and it is difficult to decide which one is worse. Everything out here, including the chaos that the storyline unleashes, is heightened caricature. Bachchhan Paandey is a massy and messy potboiler that wilts under its own weight.

The kindest thing I can say about this Hindi remake of Karthick Subbaraj’s ‘Jigarthanda’, in which a wet-behind-the-ears director sets about making a film about a notorious gangster, is that it shouldn’t have been attempted at all.Literally nothing about ‘Bachchhan Paandey’ reaches the level of hilarity plus inspired lunacy of the original.

For the action fans, there is enough brutality and bloodbath that is shot in slick frames. Given that it’s a remake of a formula film in the genre of dark, action comedies, ‘Bachchhan Paandey’ replicates what has already worked in the south. But even with all its grandiosity and starpower, this one only manages to entertain in bits and pieces.

Not like the trailer has hidden anything. You already know almost 80 percent of the movie. Take that break at your leisure. The definition of ‘masala films’ might just blur out due to the haphazard remakes that are served in disguise. Bachchhan Paandey could have been anything but it gets busy promoting its caricature.

Kumar looks menacing and sleepwalks through a role that is made for him. The movie bestows him with abundant opportunities to flaunt each shade of his skill. His fans are going to have one helluva time at this freak show. If you savour a typical out-and-out masala movie, this one’s for you. Others, avoid it! Moreover, the film’s tagline reads, ‘Holi pe goli.’ But after watching the film, you will surely need ‘a headache ki goli.’

Farhad Samji’s direction is weak. He handles the grandeur and scale well and shows his brilliance in the action and dramatic moments. However, with the script being weak, the direction also gets affected. There’s little humour and too much of violence, when it should have been vice versa. The story of a dreaded gangster whose life is going to be captured on celluloid gives a deja vu of WELCOME (2007). That was a much loved film with a great script and ideally, BACHCHAN PAANDEY should have been in that league. On the positive side, Farhad Samji handles the flashback portion of Sophie very well. The twist in the tale in the climax is also well treated.
