Attack on Titan: Season 4 Part 2 Ending Explained! Why Eren Not Changed? Historia and Eren Child?

In a long flashback, episode 87 clearly reveals the reasons that prompted Eren to use the roar of the earth. The explanation, scene by scene, of the ending of the Season 4 Part 2.

Episode 87 of Attack on Titan is truly unsettling. We would expect the survivors aboard the ship to somehow manage to operate the seaplane, attempting to reach Eren, but much of the time is devoted to a long flashback. After many episodes in which he never appeared, Eren makes his return of him, with a long excursus in which Mikasa clearly sees the intentions of the man she loves, whom until now she had not seen clearly. Here’s what happens in the finale of the second part of the fourth season of Attack on Titan.

Attack on Titan: Season 4 Part 2 Ending Explained: Eren Has Never Changed

Everyone says that Eren has changed, I thought so too. But what if we get it all wrong? Mikasa’s voiceover introduces episode 87, titled The Dawn of Humanity. On the deck of the ship that will lead her and the other survivors on a desperate attempt to intercept Eren and convince him to stop, Mikasa remembers the first reconnaissance mission on the continent, to Marley, and realizes something important about Eren.

Until now, the anime had never shown us the moment when Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Levi and the other protagonists had infiltrated Marley for the first time. We only knew that Eren had drifted away during the trip. Months later, thanks to the help of the unconscious Falcon, he had written to his friends, communicating his intention to ally with Zeke and forcing them to go and save him.

Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2

In this episode we see the discovery of the outside world by the Eldians of the island of Paradis. It is a long flashback in which the character of Sasha also returns, who we know was killed by Gabi sometime later.

Mikasa retraces that journey, awakening an atmosphere of fun and comedy that the anime hasn’t known for a long time. We see the undercover protagonists rescuing a foreign child accused of theft and then being invited to the camp where the little one lives. This is the last happy moment for the group, the last smiles and jokes before the situation escalates and the very existence of Paradis is put in danger.

Mikasa’s Statement

Thinking back to those moments Mikasa realizes that Eren had already made his decision, determined to find a way to activate the roar of the earth and exterminate anyone outside of Paradis. The reason? Saving the people he loves, Mikasa first, and making sure they can live happily.

For this reason Eren appears distant, distracted, as if distressed by the grandeur of an external world that he is already thinking of destroying. When he participates in the assembly of the committee that aims to protect the Eldians but marks the inhabitants of Paradis as devils guilty of the persecutions suffered by the descendants of Ymir, Eren leaves. He understood that the path to peace will be long and winding and decided to use the roar of the earth. Mikasa finds him on a hill, while he cries looking at the camp of some refugees.

Eren suddenly asks her what he means to her if she only protects him because he saved her when they were little or if she has feelings for him. Mikasa calls Eren her family, indirectly confirming that she loves him. The girl wonders desperately if she had given him a different answer, he would not have made a different choice.

Historia Proposes To Eren To Have A Child

In fact, Eren is very tormented by his choice, which will kill millions of innocent people. In the second half of the episode we see the same events from his point of view. We discover that Eren met Yelena and then Zeke revealing his plan to Flock and instructing him to make sure that everything was ready for Paradis too.

In one scene we see him talking to Historia, revealing his plan. Eren reveals to the queen that the politicians plan to make him become a giant and eat Zeke, in order to use the founder again: Eren doesn’t want that to happen.

The girl tells him that she absolutely disagrees with Eren’s plan and that destroying the continent would make what happened to him happen again. Other children would see their mothers killed and swear revenge. Eren’s plan, however, is total extermination: the cancellation of all that millenary history of violence and revenge at the root, eliminating anyone who has any memory of what happened in the distant and near past.

Eren proposes to Historia, anguished and annoyed by the plan, to erase her memory with the power of the founder. She disagrees and offers him to have a child together, to continue the royal lineage of Paradis. We don’t see how the exchange ends, but we do know that Historia is pregnant during the last arc of events.

The Attacking Giant Appears In His True Form

Eren has one last confrontation with Zeke, after being wounded in the trenches in order to pass himself off as an invalid Eldian soldier. The older brother convinces him that Mikasa is not conditioned as Ackermann, but she simply loves him so much that she is willing to face the giants for him.

Let’s go back to the present, where an imposing fleet tries to stop the very fast advance of the roar of the earth: the new giants are in fact also skilled swimmers. Despite the heavy shelling, the giants wipe out the ships within minutes and arrive on the continent. Leading them is Eren, in a new form that is recognized by the population as Attack on Titan.

The promise that Eren as a child in the second episode of the anime made to himself is about to be kept. After seeing his mother die devoured by a giant, Eren promised himself that he would exterminate the perpetrators (who at the time thought to be giants) from the face of the earth. The destruction of the continent begins.

  1. Historia did not propose to have a child with him. Historia suggests to get pregnant as a way to avoid having to run away or fight, which is what Eren wanted her to do initially, to avoid to eat Zeke and continue that cycle. We learned it was Historia’s idea and that she knew all along of his plan. We learned The scene in part 1, which Historia approaches the father of her child in the barn who works for her (who was also talked about in part 1), happens canonically after her conversation with Eren. We learned who warned Historia (it was Eren) and who suggested to get pregnant (it was Historia herself who came with the idea as a way to save herself).
