Argylle Post-Credit Scene Explained: The Post-Credits Scene That Changes the Meaning Of The Film

Matthew Vaughn expands his roster of horny spies with Argylle, his new comedy starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Herny Cavill. The director of genre-renovating hits like Kick-Ass and Kingsman returns to action with this bet taken from the novel by Elly Conway, a mysterious author whose identity is a mystery. That same author lends her name to the writer who is the protagonist of this story, played by Howard, who sees her quiet life with her cat take a 180-degree turn when the plot of her literary spy saga comes to life and it is up to her to expose the Division, the criminal syndicate that pursues her. For more than two hours of footage, we accompany Elly on an adventure full of plot twists and discover that, in reality, the protagonist is Rachel Kelly, a secret agent who has been brainwashed.

Argylle First Look

Thus, Kelly has reflected on Argylle (Cavill), the spy in her best-selling novels, her own story. Vaughn has several more tricks up his sleeve, such as Elly’s betrayal of his secret organization to collude with his enemies, or his final redemption by allying himself once again with Aiden (Sam Rockwell), his partner on missions (and in love). In the last minutes of the film, the couple manages to stop their adversaries from the Division and uncover the data that compromises them. However, after completing this task, Vaughn still has one last scene in store in which Elly/Rachel presents her new book about Argylle in front of several readers. The last fan to join the question time is none other than Henry Cavill, that is, Argylle (although with long hair and a toupee), whom the protagonist looks at with a surprised face. He assures that she surely has many questions to ask him. Not content with surprising us with this final twist, the director joins it to his post-credit scene, in which he gives us more clues about Argylle and, with this, completely changes the meaning of the film we have just seen.

Argylle Post-Credits Scene Explained: Changes the Meaning Of The Film

Argylle draws from Kingsman in content and form. Not content with recovering actors from the first installment such as Samuel L. Jackson and Sofia Boutella, who played the villain with a lisp and his henchman in Firth and Egerton’s film, the more the plot progresses, the more similar it becomes to the saga of Vaughn in its colorful action scenes and parody tone. Will it be a warning of what is coming? The post-credits scene takes us 20 years before the events that occurred in Argylle, to an English pub called The King’s Man. Inside, a young man played by Louis Partridge (Enola Holmes) approaches the bar to order a complicated cocktail that is nothing more than a code.

The owner of the establishment shows him a box containing a gun while the protagonist introduces himself as Aubrey Argylle. The screen then announces that Argylle: The First Book will hit screens soon, predicting a prequel to Argylle. Thus, Louis Partridge is the young version of Cavill’s character, who, according to the end of the film, also exists in the present of Argylle and could be a member of Kingsman, confirming that all Vaughn’s spy movies share a universe (can we name it already like the Matthew Vaughn Cinematic Universe?). However, this theory confuses and leaves many loose ends. If the Kingsman saga and Argylle share a world, why do Samuel L. Jackson and Sofia Boutella play different characters in the first Kingsman and this last film? What if the announced prequel refers to the first book by the real Elly Conway and not Howard’s?

Without knowing how Vaughn justifies this mess, two explanations come to mind. The first is that everything is an invention of Conway. The author has been able to write the stories of Kingsman and Argylle, giving her characters the physicality of people who are part of her life. As for the second, could it be that Elly is a member of Kingsman? Although, being North American, it would make more sense for her to belong to the Statesman of Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017). You’ll have to be patient and wait to see how your story continues on screen. Let us remember that Vaughn assured a few months ago that, after a sequel that aroused lukewarm reactions and a battered prequel, he was working on the third installment of Kingsman, which would recover the adventures of Taron Egerton as Eggsy. Now that, in some way, Aubrey Argylle shares a universe with the best-dressed spies in the United Kingdom, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for us to see Cavill in a suit in Kingsman 3. Remember, Henry, manners make the man.
