The plot of the short film on Netflix starring Anuja, played by Sajda Pathan, who was a girl who lives under the care of the NGO. The short film is committed to making it clear how difficult it is for a disadvantaged person to break the mold and free himself from poverty, to have what he deserves. In addition, Anuja teaches that when the right opportunity to change your life presents itself, it is not easy to follow it. During the short film, we know Palak, the protagonist’s sister, who has always taken care of her, not making her miss their mother. Anuja doesn’t have many memories, unlike her, of their mom, as she was much smaller when she died.
The two sisters work in a clothing factory with a low salary, for more than 12 hours a day. The money they receive is not enough to have a roof over their heads or to eat properly. Both are embittered and do not have high expectations for the future. At the same time, they are not discouraged, as the important thing for them is to be together. Palak is aware that Anuja has talent and wants to see her study and have a good life. One day the teacher Mishra arrives, and reveals to the employer of the two sisters, Verma, that he wants to allow Anuja to take an admission test to study in a school, with his education financed.
A Childhood Denied
Anuja is only nine, but her life is already marked by a fate she has not chosen. Work in one clothing factory, immersed in a suffocating and exhausting environment, where childhood dissolves under the weight of duty. Every day it repeats itself the same as the previous one, without space for dreams or hopes. Yet when the opportunity to attend school presents itself, the world around her seems to falter. Her choice is not only personal: it is a struggle against a system that has always kept her chained to her role. This is one of the most powerful forces of the short film: does not just show the pain, but makes the viewer live it. The scenes in the factory are harsh, almost suffocating, while the most intimate moments between Anuja and his family let all the weight of his responsibility emerge. It is not only a question of material poverty, but also of giving up on oneself for the good of others.

Anuja’s most excruciating thing is the way sacrifice is told. He is never screamed, he is never spectacularized, but he insinuates himself silently in the choices of the protagonist. Alongside poverty and sacrifice, Anuja highlights another great injustice: prejudice. The company has already decided which place the protagonist should be, and the mere fact that it wants to study is seen as an act of rebellion. His intelligence and determination are not immediately recognized as quality but as threats. It is a demonstration of how easily we can judge who is next to us without even really knowing him. The short message is clear: prejudice is not only that of others towards us but also what we have towards ourselves. How many times do we convince ourselves that we are not enough, just because the world has told us that we cannot aspire to something more?
A Raw and Authentic Direction
What makes Anuja even more unique is the way it was shot. Direction is essential, without frills, but incredibly effective in transmitting the sense of oppression. The shots in the factories are narrow, almost claustrophobic, while those in Anuja’s house are more open but never bright: even the space that should be safe is permeated by the fatigue of survival. Photography helps to create a realistic atmosphere: earthy, dull colors help make dust, heat, and tiredness tangible. There is nothing artificial: every detail, from worn clothes to faces marked by fatigue, is designed to make us feel inside that reality, without filters.
Anuja is not an easy film to watch, but it is a story of what remains inside. It is a hymn to willpower, to the ability to challenge fate, but also a hard reminder of how unfair the world can be. It’s not just the story of a little girl fighting for a better future. It is the story of all those who, in one way or another, felt trapped in a role imposed by others. And it reminds us that, even when it seems impossible, we always have the right to dream.
How Anuja Movie Ending Explained
Mr. Verma has no intention of suffering losses in the factory and opposes it. Before leaving, Mishra advises Anuja to take that test at all costs. Palak hopes his sister will accept. Not only that, but she also reveals to Anuja that she has sewn bags that would have allowed her to earn 400 rupees for the exam fee. The girl knows, however, that her sister is collecting money for her wedding. Both want each other’s good, putting aside their dreams. Anuja sneaks into a mall and sells two bags to a wealthy woman for 800 rupees. That day the two sisters take advantage of the income to eat snacks and go to see a movie.
Mr. Verma notes Anuja’s talent in mathematics and asks her to help him keep the accounts, aware that the test is set for Tuesday at 8. Asking her to show up at the office right at that time, the threat that his sister will fire if he does not show up. Poor Anuja does not know what to do and understands that Palak could not follow her to a boarding school. Unfortunately, the girl cannot understand that education could lead her to improve both her life and that of her sister. Nobody ever told you. Anuja on Netflix ends up on the most beautiful: the girl watches Palak enter the factory to work, while standing at the end of the alley thinking about what to do.
Will Anuja go for the exam or did she reach Mr. Verma in the office? Taking into consideration his ideas, linked to what he has always seen and what he believes is best for his sister, we could imagine that she did not go to take the admission test. But there is also the hope that, instead, Anuja will finally understand that outside their life there is a reality that can lead her and her sister to have a decidedly different and better future.
