All the Old Knives: The Plot And The Trailer
Henry Pelham and Celia Harrison tell lies, in professional and private life. They were two CIA spies , and also a former couple of lovers. Their relationship and their careers could not withstand a terrorist attack that took place years earlier at the Vienna airport: the yellow of Flight 127. On that Royal Jordanian plane hijacked by an armed group all the passengers died and the attackers enjoyed a strange collaboration from some of the services.
The Flight 127 case still haunts the Agency, Langley’s upper floors and Pelham himself today. Henry is tasked with finding out if there is a mole among his old colleagues and flies from Europe to Carmel-by-the-Sea, an idyllic town on the Californian coast where Celia has moved to throw that painful past behind her. The former lovers meet again for dinner for the first time in six years. Henry is sure he can nail Celia: he wants to get the truth out of her about what really happened in Vienna and why she left him right after the attack. But nothing is as it seems and you should never trust anyone: two fundamental rules of the trade that those who have worked for the CIA know very well.

Blue eyes and a lot of charm set aside for a lonely and wrinkled character, Chris Pine is agent Pelham, while Thandiwe Newton has taken over from Michelle Williams as the beautiful Celia. Jonathan Pryce is Bill Compton, the upright CIA chief who works with Vick Wallinger, the coordinator of the Vienna spy group played by Laurence Fishburne. Important roles in the rest of the cast are Jonjo O’Neill (he is Ernst Pul, an Austrian naturalized American spy) and David Dawson, the disturbing cryptographer Owen Lassiter.

After the adaptation of his The Tourist and the creation of the Berlin Station series, Olen Steinhauer is confronted for the first time with the direct transposition of one of his works. The screenplay for All the Old Knives – Dinner of Spies is by the writer himself, while Janus Metz is behind the camera.
The Danish director made himself known with the documentaries Love on Delivery and Ticket to Paradise, the controversial docu-fiction on the war in Afghanistan Armadillo (winner of the Grand Prix of the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes) and Borg/McEnroe, the tennis biopic with Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf who won the Audience Award at the Rome Festival. Metz also directed the third episode of the second season of True Detective, the doc Heartbound: A Different Kind of Love Story and three episodes of ZeroZeroZero, the Sky Original series based on Roberto Saviano’s bestseller.
In an interview with Variety at the American premiere of All the Old Knives at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles, Pine called Steinhauer’s script “one of the best scripts I’ve ever read” and the end result “a love story, really of other times, of those we love like Casablanca and The English Patient “.
It’s a great movie, it’s a great puzzle and a great whodunit. When I read the script I was surprised by the ending.
