Alita: Battle Angel 2 and 3 Apparently Confirmed by James Cameron

After years of uncertainty, director and producer James Cameron has seemingly confirmed that more Alita: Battle Angel movies are indeed moving forward. Released in 2019, Alita: Battle Angel by director Robert Rodriguez serves as an adaptation of the Japanese manga Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita, in English) by Yukito Kishiro. The film garnered generally positive reviews and was a tepid success at the box office and because of this result, the promised sequels have long remained uncertain.

Now, however, in a recent interview with Forbes about why he chose to sell his California mansion, Cameron, in his explanation, appears to be revealing that more sequels to Alita: Battle Angel is in the works. The producer won’t reveal details or timelines, but development will presumably occur between his work on the three remaining Avatar sequels. And on Avatar, I’m working in Wellington and Los Angeles. And in the new Alita: Battle Angel movies, I’ll be working in Austin, so it just didn’t make sense to us anymore”.

Alita: Battle Angel 2 and 3 Coming Soon

Earlier this year, Rodriguez revealed that Cameron had outlined the overall storylines for Alita: Battle Angel 2 and 3. This followed several months of other updates and minor reports in which stars and creative talent expressed their desire to return for one or more additional films. It’s worth noting that despite Cameron’s hopeful comments, there have yet to be any official announcements from Disney regarding any more Alita films. Cameron’s statement is therefore particular, since, in general, the green light for a third film depends on how the second one fares at the box office. Cameron may be very confident that the first sequel will do well or, perhaps, the second and third films will be shot back-to-back, adopting an Avatar-like franchise strategy. If Alita: Battle Angel 2 and 3 are indeed moving forward in the next few years, an official announcement from Disney shouldn’t be too far off.

What’s the Latest on Alita – Alita: Battle Angel 2?

According to the latest report, James Cameron — who wrote the screenplay for the original film — has been asked to direct Alita: Battle Angel 2. While Cameron and producer Jon Landau are looking to make a sequel, Disney CEO Bob Iger won’t greenlight the project unless James Cameron is the director. The first film was directed by Robert Rodriguez, but it seems that Disney wants Cameron to be at the helm of this other film. The report goes on to mention that Cameron has been reluctant to accept due to his busy schedule, which includes Last Train from Hiroshima, as well as the third and fourth Avatar films. However, World of Reel notes that James Cameron is considering the offer. The 2019 film is directed by Robert Rodriguez from a screenplay written by James Cameron, Laeta Kalogridis, and Rodriguez. Based on Yukito Kishiro ‘s Gunnm manga series, Alita: Battle Angel was produced by Cameron and Jon Landau.

Like the #SaveDaredevil and Release the Snyder Cut movements, the Alita Army has become an organized effort in an effort to pressure movie executives to greenlight future sequels. In total, Alita grossed $405 million worldwide for 20th Century Fox in 2019. Though development on the sequels has stalled due to the studio merger, Alita director Robert Rodriguez has always been optimistic that Disney executives reportedly chose to continue the franchise.

Perhaps there’s still a little hope left for the sequel to Alita Battle Angel. Speaking with Deadline at the premiere of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, producer Jon Landau said he has been in discussions with director Robert Rodriguez about a potential sequel. “There’s a little movie called Alita: Battle Angel that we’d love to make a sequel to. I’m talking to Robert about it and hopefully, it comes to fruition,” he said. “I never put a deadline on anything because you would hold it against me”.
