A Quiet Place: Day One Ending Explained: Sam and Eric, Do They Survive?
Set in New York, A Quiet Place: Day One follows a woman named Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) who goes through the terrifying first moments of the alien invasion in the loudest city in the world. The prequel to the 2018 film directed by John Krasinski and starring Emily Blunt introduces Eric (Joseph Quinn), a law student accompanying Sam and his cat Frodo. Can they survive? What happened to the protagonists of the third installment of the saga? Next, I’ll tell you what these characters do to escape the city before it’s too late. The film directed by Michael Sarnoski from a script he co-wrote with Jeff Nichols begins by showing Samira’s life in a hospital for patients with terminal cancer. Even though she attends a support group, Sam has nothing positive to say she makes hurtful comments about the nurse caring for her, Reuben (Alex Wolff), who tries to understand her attitude. The only thing Sam really cares about is her cat Frodo.
Together they will try to cross, as silently as possible, the city of New York, knowing that at a certain point it, ships have been organized to rescue the survivors, having discovered that the aliens fear water. However, more than the ships, Samira is interested in getting to Patsy’s, a pizzeria, where she intends to get a pizza. Hers may seem like an unusual whim, given the context that surrounds her, but this desire of hers actually hides something more. Reuben convinces the protagonist of A Quiet Place: Day One to go with the group to the theater with the promise of a jazz performance and a slice of pizza at the end of the show. However, he is unable to comply because military alerts force them to return to the hospital. Disappointed and angry, Sam boards the bus, but before she can immerse herself in her pessimism, thousands of meteorites fall to earth, chaos breaks out, and strange creatures begin to attack people.
A Quiet Place: Day One: The Story Plot
A Quiet Place: Day One takes us to the beginning of the invasion of the so-called “Angels of Death”, the terrifying and bloodthirsty aliens who in the first A Quiet Place we understood had reduced the Earth into a sort of gigantic carnage. Equipped with fearful strength, extremely ferocious, with apparently indestructible armor, they had forced the few survivors to embrace a life where silence was the only weapon to survive. Their arrival on Earth, aboard the remains of their planet, here coincides with a trip that Reuben (Alex Wolff), a nurse, has prepared for his patients, almost all of whom are cancer patients. Among these, the one with whom he has the closest relationship is Sam (Lupita Nyong’o), who, armed with cynicism, a sense of humor, and the inseparable cat Frodo, follows him to the Big Apple, to attend a theater show together with the others. Within a short time, however, aliens begin to appear in droves on the streets of the city, bringing death and terror everywhere.
Sam, who constantly needs drugs and painkillers, will begin a fight for survival which will become, thanks to the fortuitous meeting with Erico (Joseph Quinn), a chance to rediscover what she liked about life, make peace with her condition, while everything around her death, destruction and panic besiege everyone and the city becomes a gigantic open-air slaughterhouse. From the beginning, A Quiet Place: Day One shows that it does not want to stray an inch from what the previous two episodes had been, of which it imitates the narrative nature of a micro-story in the most absolute sense, its identity as a personal odyssey within a global catastrophe, experienced through the eyes of a protagonist, to whom Lupita Nyong’o can give profound humanity, verisimilitude, and realism. In her, we certainly have the most convincing part of a film which however, after an encouraging and also visually impactful start, begins to slip perhaps a little too much into sentimentality, into melody even, to go around in circles as if it didn’t know how evolve.
A Quiet Place: Day One Ending Explained: Sam and Eric, Do They Survive?
Sam is unconscious due to a blow to the head and when he wakes up he finds himself in the theater with other refugees, including Henri (Djimon Hounsou), a character who appears in “A Quiet Place Part II“, Reuben and Frodo, who plays noise and attracts the attention of the aliens. Although they manage to avoid the deadly attacks, they must remain silent to avoid becoming another victim. Thanks to the radio, they learn that the military plans to bomb the bridges to prevent the creatures from reaching more cities. They also reveal that monsters do not survive in water. The noise of the helicopters drives the creatures away from the theater, but each explosion reduces their chances of survival. The sound caused by the failure of the electricity generator alerts survivors. Reuben manages to put it out, but in the process is killed by one of the aliens. After mourning his only friend, Sam decides to leave the shelter and head to Patsy’s pizzeria with his beloved cat.
Outside, she takes supplies and finds two children hiding under a fountain. She offers them food and invites them to follow her. The creatures lurk, but they manage to avoid their attacks. When the helicopters drive the creatures away, the other survivors leave the buildings and head to the port to escape the city. The problem is that they make too much noise and chaos breaks out. Amid the carnage, Frodo escapes and ends up in a flooded train station, where a shocked Eric sees him as hope. After following the cat, Eric reaches Sam, who advises him to follow the refugees. However, the young man prefers to accompany her. Together they head to Sam’s apartment to get the medications the woman needs to counteract her terminal illness.
Why Does Sam Insist on Going to Patsy’s Pizzeria?
Sam’s last wish was to go to the pizzeria where she used to go with her father, a well-known pianist who died of muscle cancer, a disease he inherited from her. While they are in the apartment, she shares a little more of her personal history, talks about her father’s optimism, and how after his death she distanced herself from everyone and lost the meaning of her life. The next day, the protagonist of A Quiet Place: Day One goes off on her own, but Eric follows her. On the way to the pizzeria, they attract the attention of the creatures and are forced to enter a flooded subway station. They lose their medicines but manage to escape with their lives. Due to the journey, Sam’s health worsens, so Eric goes out to find medicine.
After coming close to death, Eric returns to the church and uses the drugs to stabilize Sam. When they finally reach Patsy’s they realize that she’s burned out and take refuge in the bar where Sam’s father used to play the piano. In a last attempt to cheer up his partner, Eric gets a pizza from another place and offers it to Sam. Soon after, they perform a magic show and share a fun time. From the emergency stairs, they see the ships in the port and realize that it is their last chance to escape. Sam is determined to sacrifice herself for Eric and helps him reach the boat by attracting the creatures. As Henri greets Eric and Frodo on the boat, Sam takes one last look at the photo of her father, turns up the volume on her iPod, and waits for the attack. What happened to Eric? In the second A Quiet Place movie, Henri and a group of survivors formed a sanctuary on an island. Although Eric did not appear, he likely was one of the inhabitants. Did he survive the subsequent attack on the island?
Why Does Samira Give Eric Her Yellow Sweater Before Leaving?
Before they get to that, though, Samira gives Eric her yellow sweater. Even though it was a wordless exchange, the reason is certainly sentimental. The sweater is something Eric can keep remembering her by. It is tangible, a piece of her that would give him comfort beyond his cat Frodo. As Eric will later discover, Samira has also put a note in the sweater’s pocket thanking him for what he has done for her and for giving her one last day full of joy, despite the alien invasion.
Why Does Samira Choose to Stay on the Ground?
After this exchange, the two take different paths. Eric heads towards the ship with the survivors, while Samira remains on the ground, starting to make noise in the streets so that Eric can safely get on the boat to the island – the same island where he is first introduced to Djimon Hounsou’s character in A Quiet Place II. Samira then starts crashing into cars and setting off alarms so the creatures will hear her and chase her. Eric thus has time to head towards the dock with the cat, racing to reach the water before the creatures reach him. The operation is successful and the boy manages to get on the ship, now safe from the terrifying aliens. But it is at this point that we realize that Samira has remained on the ground, of her own free will. The girl probably never considered the possibility of heading to the ship herself. Escaping to the ship, after all, would not have saved her from a disease that would kill her sooner or later in any case. Once she was certain that her friend was safe, Samira therefore took a last walk in the city, rediscovering its natural sounds too often drowned out by those of man.
Does Samira Die at the End of A Quiet Place: Day One?
That silence and everything she had experienced up to that moment put her at peace with that world and that life that had disappointed her by first taking away her beloved father and then making her sick. Finally, Samira decides to unplug the headphone jack from the stereo, making the song she was listening to – Feeling Good by Nina Simone – resound at full volume in the streets of New York. A gesture that naturally attracts one (or more) of the aliens, who then swoop down on her with intentions that we now know well. Although we don’t actually show what happens to her, it’s pretty clear that Samira is attacked and killed by the alien. The girl chooses to go away like that, dying on her own terms, without fear, rather than waiting for the disease to take away all her strength and deprive her of the good mood she feels at the end. Samira had been close to death for a long time, so it’s possible that she felt that it was her time to go anyway. This choice was certainly favored by her having the opportunity to feel alive again for one last time.
A Quiet Place: Day One Preparation A Quiet Place 3?
A Quiet Place: Day One reveals that Eric has boarded the boat, which confirms that he arrived on the island with Djimon Hounsou’s character, where a small community of survivors is then built, reorganized to try to carry on a quiet life with the certainty that the water that surrounds them protects them. This community, as anticipated, is introduced to us for the first time in A Quiet Place II, where however an alien who has managed to overcome the obstacle of the water begins to sow death and destruction. In that scene, Eric is not mentioned, but since we now know he is there, he could reappear in the future. It is possible that A Quiet Place Part 3, confirmed after the box office success of A Quiet Place II, will also include Eric, who may have survived the alien attack at the end of A Quiet Place II, which we know instead character played by Hounsou did not survive. For now, it is unclear who will return in A Quiet Place 3, although it is reasonable to expect that Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, and the actors of her children will reprise their roles to launch a decisive attack on the aliens. It would also certainly be exciting to see Eric again, perhaps in the meantime having become one of the leaders of the resistance.
