A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Who is Ser Duncan the Tall and Who is Egg?

Who is Ser Duncan the Tall and Who is Egg? After the success of Game of Thrones and House of The Dragons, George RR Martin’s universe grows with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the second spin-off that takes place in the times of King Aegon V Targaryen, and follows a knight who is an ancestor of Brienne of Tarth. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on the Dunk & Egg short stories, which take place a century before Robert Baratheon arrives at Winterfell to visit Ned Stark and arrange a marriage between his “son” and Sansa Stark, or before Daenerys Targaryen emerges from the fire intact and with three newborn dragons.

According to the IMDb synopsis: A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes roamed Westeros… a young, naive but brave knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. In a time when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has yet to fade from living memory, great destinies, powerful enemies, and dangerous deeds await these unlikely and incomparable friends. At this point, the dragons, or at least most of the known ones, are dead, but the Targaryens are still powerful, and the Seven Kingdoms are at a point of major change, Duncan the Tall and Egg are at the center of this story.

Who is Ser Duncan The Tall from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

Duncan the Tall, also known as Dunk, was the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard under King Aegon V Targaryen. Dunk is said to have been born in Flea Bottom and became a knight after winning a tourney (taking the place of the knight Arlan of Pennytree, who took him off the streets as a child and taught him sword fighting, in secret) and eventually made his way to the Seven Kingdoms, where he meets a hairless boy who asks to be made his squire, that boy being Egg. Together, Dunk and Egg travel through different cities, including Dorne and Winterfell, until Egg must return home to assume his responsibilities.

According to Martin himself, Dunk is the ancestor of Brienne of Tarth (played by Gwendoline Christie, from the Wednesday series), the warrior who swore to Catelyn Stark that she would protect her children, and who made a dangerous journey to deliver Jaime Lannister to justice, at least until the two have to fight together to survive. In the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series, Duncan the Tall is portrayed by Peter Claffey, who previously appeared in Vikings: Valhalla as Dunstan.

Who is Egg from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

Egg is simply a nickname, the real name of this character is Aegon Targaryen, but he is not Aegon II and neither is he Aegon III, who was one of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s sons. Egg is actually the son of Prince Maekar Targaryen and is a prince himself, he is the brother of Maester Aemon from Game of Thrones, and after squirering Dunk and traveling with him across the realm, he is nominated by the Great Council, skipping over many other candidates, to become king, becoming known as Aegon V Targaryen. In the series, Egg, who decides to shave his hair so that he will not be identified as a Targaryen and can become a squire, is played by Dexter Sol Ansell, the young actor who played Coriolanus Snow as a child in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
