A Haunting in Venice: The Teaser is Terrifying and Enigmatic

A Haunting in Venice is the third cinematic chapter by Kenneth Branagh dedicated to the novels of Agatha Christie. After Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and Death on the Nile (2022), respectively inspired by the 1934 book of the same name and the novel Poirot on the Nile (1937), the new feature film seems to have much more veiled connections with the famous mystery writer. This work is in part the transposition of Poirot and the massacre of the innocents, released in 1969, where the legendary detective participates in a particular party where murders take place. However, from what can be seen in the recent teaser published directly on the official YouTube channel of 20th Century Studios, if some elements are in common, for the most part, the story takes alternative derivations.

Set in post-WWII Venice, on the eve of All Saints’ Day, A Haunting in Venice is “a terrifying mystery that sees the return of the famous detective Hercule Poirot. Now retired and in self-imposed exile in the most glamorous city in the world, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance in a decaying and haunted mansion. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.”

This is Branagh’s first horror film since directing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in 1994, and it’s shaping up to be a great film! Branagh said: “This is a fantastic development of the Hercule Poirot character and the Agatha Christie franchise. Based on a tale of complex and little-known mysteries, set on Halloween in a picturesquely enchanting city, it’s an extraordinary opportunity for us filmmakers, and we’re relishing the chance to offer something truly chilling to our loyal cinematic audience.”

Steve Asbell, President of 20th Century Studios, said: “We are enormously privileged to continue our long association with the incomparable Sir Kenneth Branagh and we couldn’t be more excited about the bold new creative direction that Ken, Michael and the rest of the directorial team have undertaken with this latest film. We are also grateful to James Prichard and the other friends of Agatha Christie, Ltd., for their cooperation and for once again entrusting us with, as Poirot modestly describes himself, ‘probably the greatest detective in the world’”.
