Laal Singh Chaddha Critics Review: Aamir Khan comes in 3-4 years and when he comes, he does wonders… This time the atmosphere is a bit negative about Laal Singh Chaddha. The film is a remake of the Hollywood film Forrest Gump and not because of this there is a demand for a boycott of the film for some other reason, but if you love cinema then do not boycott this film. I have been seeing the boycott trend on social media for some time now. I am talking only from the point of view of cinema. The demand to boycott Laal Singh Chaddha has been going on for a long time. But after watching Laal Singh Chaddha I am saying that every person should watch this film. Not because this film gives you lectures on patriotism. You should watch Laal Singh Chaddha because it is a good film.

Laal Singh Chaddha Critics Review
Laal Singh Chaddha should be seen as a stand-alone film and not a separate remake. Because it has more to say than Forrest Gump. This does not mean that Forrest Gump is less than Aamir Khan’s film. The challenge before Laal Singh Chaddha was always that he could reach around ‘Forrest Gump’. This film goes far beyond that challenge. This is what it achieves. Laal Singh Chaddha is a must-watch film, as it talks to the human being, not your inner spectator.

On the whole, Laal Singh Chaddha is a dull and over-indulgent fare which will find some appreciation among the classes mainly but will not find favour with the masses. It will, therefore, not make a mark at the box-office. Collections in high-end multiplexes will be somewhat good but the film will not be able to score in lesser multiplexes, single-screen cinemas and smaller stations. Having said that, it must be added that its business in the final tally would be more than its merits because of the bountiful first eight-day week which is full of extra holidays (Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day, Janmashtami and Parsi New Year).

Ironically, when it comes to holding a mirror to society, the most telling detail might just be the essay-sized announcement at the start of Laal Singh Chaddha. Prior to its release, the film was subjected to vicious, online trolling by those who stand opposed to Laal Singh Chaddha because it’s headlined by one actor who is Muslim and another who is Hindu but married to a Muslim. To pre-empt any misunderstandings or allegations of ‘distorting’ facts, the film begins with a written assurance to the audience that while there are visual effects used on archival footage, Laal Singh Chaddha does not seek to rewrite history or cause any offence to anyone. It says a lot about present-day India that being imaginative has to come with a disclaimer.

The movie has ample of moments that stand out, right from Laal’s first day in school to Aamir’s cute punchlines, and all the so many little moments that make the film what it is. Atul Kulkarni’s writing is the absolute best and it is what strikes the chord since get go. While the film might have its flaws, the strength of this film lies in its ability to Indianise everything and make it an adaptation in its truest sense. Right from the Sikh riots to the Bombay bombings, and its subtle commentary of religion, the movie is a beautiful narration of everything we love to watch today.

Ultimately, of course, Laal Singh Chaddha must stand on its own sans comparisons since it is being viewed in 2022 by a whole generation of viewers to whom Forrest Gump is not a cultural reference that evokes nostalgia. Like its source material, this film too has some moving and thought-provoking elements, but the makers’ instinct for self-preservation causes them to dilute its potentially most compelling arguments in addition to skipping inconvenient truths about present-day India that could have given it the spark it sorely lacks in its current form.

More importantly, Forrest Gump was essentially about how America withstood the internal and external threats in the 1960s and 70s and evolved only to run into new challenges. Here, apart from the anti-Sikh riots that affect a young Chaddha, the rest of the socio-political churn fails to create emotional upheaval. Once the umbilical cord between the events and Chaddha’s life is broken, the screenplay starts resembling Chaddha’s almost neurotic obsession with running. The film talks a lot, almost tutors the audience, and doesn’t allow the visuals to communicate. Pritam’s music isn’t bad, but doesn’t provide the much-needed local flavour to the narrative.

Aamir Khan’s last great performance, some say, was Dangal. For me, it was Ghajini. It is ironic, therefore, that the actor, like the protagonist of the Memento remake, has forgotten what ‘acting’ is. And utterly heartbreaking. The method actor who made method acting common parlance now resorts to grunts and more grunts in his reinterpretation of Forrest Gump, a role synonymous with Tom Hanks from the film of the same name. The official Hindi adaptation of this Hollywood classic, Laal Singh Chaddha, much like that iconic buoying white feather, common in both films, floats but each time it lands at Aamir’s shoes, is simply trampled upon.

If the original conveyed things best in a soft, easy, unspoken way; this film turns up the tone and energy a bit. It opts for speech over silent tears so expect a perpetually wide-eyed Aamir Khan doing a lot of Punjabi accent with PK’s body language and enthusiasm. He sets the tempo of this film a bit higher, that of a big-ticket Hindi feature film but retains the essence of the original — a Disney like fairy-tale without the luxury of magic but an ingrained belief in miracles. Laal Singh Chaddha (LSC) localises the events but continues to stay in Forrest’s world.
