The Longest Night Ending Explained: Who is Simon? Is Laura Dead? Who Was Real Mastermind?

This past Friday the new feat within the Spanish production was released among the Netflix series. The Longest Night is a sign that the Hollywood industry stopped having complexes a long time ago and that there is also room for action and suspense here. Let’s review what the new series brings us. It is the night of December 24. A group of assailants enters prison to take a prisoner who has just arrived at said prison.

The Longest Night

It is Simón Lago (Luis Callejo) a dangerous serial killer. If he is handed over, the assault will be over in a matter of minutes. However, Hugo (Alberto Ammann), the director of the prison, refuses to succumb to such blackmail and prepares to resist the attack. His reaction will be played out in the six frenetic episodes that make up the series. The new Netflix series has left us with several open fronts, so we want much more in the second season.

The Longest Night: Story Recap

The series tells the story of the Baruch psychiatric prison, which, as in other Netflix series, is very difficult to place on the map, where a new prisoner arrives on Christmas Eve who completely destabilizes his entire system. The said prisoner is Simón Lago, a serial killer who will only be in jail that night since the next morning he will be brought to justice. There is only one opportunity to talk to him inside Baruca and the prison director, Hugo (played by Alberto Amman) is not going to miss it.

He decides to go to the psychiatric center with his children, to talk to the criminal and return home, but his plans are cut short when Baruca is assaulted by some individuals who ask him to hand over Simón, a request that Hugo cannot comply as it would seriously affect his family. Thus begins a long night, in which all the characters in the prison fight to meet their personal goals without taking too much into account the well-being or the feelings of the rest of the people around them.

The characters make their decisions and “play” based on the secrets they hide, many of which are not revealed in this first batch of episodes of The Longest Night, as the series is focused on having more than one season. In other words, the plot is open. A decision of its creators that works a little against its history since, let’s remember, it happens in a single night and it is always difficult to stretch over and over again events that in reality would not exceed 12 hours in length.

Although the format of the series is comfortable since its episodes do not last more than 45 minutes, something unusual in Spanish productions, one wonders if it would have been better to stretch the chapters a little more to be able to tell the story in full. Especially if we take into account that Netflix has not yet announced a second season of The Longest Night. Which could mean two things: that the news is being saved for the time of the series premiere, or that the series could end without an end if the platform does not see that the results are worth it.

The Longest Night Ending Explained: Is Laura Dead? Who Was Real Mastermind?

The Monte Baruca prison has been shaken by a gale on the night of the year famous for being Silent Night. Precisely all series of mishaps antagonistic to that word will happen. In the last section, Hugo has tried to drive away the assailants with a car. Desperate, the prison director has put the car in gear in the middle of a brawl to drive away the rescue group or avoid more danger. But nothing seems close to normal anymore. Sara (Laia Manzanares), belonging to the group of assailants, seems to want to go on her own.

On the other hand, Cherokee (Daniel Albaladejo) had prepared an escape and sees that this is the moment to do it. He is joined by Manuela (Cecilia Freire), Javi (David Solans) or Nuria (Lucía Díez) among others. This group will see their plan thwarted by a firefight caused by the assailants. Some manage to escape, and the last thing we know is that they run into Espada (Adolfo Fernández). Cherokee and Nuria stay with the group that the men have taken hostage.

What Happens with The Kids?

Laura, Hugo’s eldest daughter, has stayed at her kidnappers’ house. She looks like she has had a seizure. Rosa and her husband are desperate because someone took her daughter Valentina and they are between a rock and a hard place, threatening to commit a serious crime to save her girl. The camera pans over some photos of a piece of furniture and one of them shows the mysterious character who has pulled all the strings from the outside so that Simón Lago gets out of jail (played by Alejandro Tous), and Hugo himself. What relationship do they all have? Meanwhile, inside Monte Baruch, Elisa and Hugo’s two young children are saved? by Simón Lago himself, leaving a little more suspense at the end of the chapter. What will happen to them?

Why Do They Want Simon?

Lennon and Hugo have a meeting on the roof. The leader of the group of men who have entered the prison tells him that if he had told him something about plan B, the kidnapping of his eldest daughter, everything would have been easier. Without reaching an understanding, Hugo is left without knowing, for the moment, why they want to prevent Simón from talking to the judge, the big question of the series. The police are approaching, so it is now Hugo who is in control of the situation. So, he asks Ruso (Roberto Álamo) to close the module. Later, Lennon comments that no one knew that he was going to transfer Simón to Baruca, with which it seems that the serial killer is being helped by someone inside (and has carried out the kidnapping of Laura by another party). And so we are left, before the aerial shot of the prison with the sirens of the police cars in the background, with a thousand questions to seek answers to.

Who is Simon?

It is the greatest enigma of this story. Callejo plays one of the most outstanding roles of his career with this unscrupulous criminal. But despite some flashbacks and that brief introduction, this character is generating a lot of curiosity. What do those powerful men want him for? What do they want to hide?
