In the 1970s and 1980s, Tammy Faye and their husband Jim Bakker, both of humble origins, managed to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting television network (and a theme park) and were revered for their message of love, access, peace, and prosperity. Tammy Faye also became legendary for her lashes, extravagant s, singing, and her desire to embrace people from all walks of life. However, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, unscrupulous rivals and scandals overthrew their carefully constructed empire.
Why see it? Can a person who is controversial in many respects and who has made his religiosity a business also be a formidable ally of the gay community in the period of AIDS? Tammy Faye, beautifully brought to life by Jessica Chastain (Oscar nominee for her role), proves yes. Eyes also to the excellent performance of Andrew Garfield.
