Minecraft Movie: Jason Momoa In Talks To Star In The Film Based On The Video Game

Jason Momoa is preparing to star in Minecraft, an adaptation of the popular video game to be directed by Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess.

Aquaman and Dune star Jason Momoa mortgages a new role for Warner Bros. The actor is about to close deals to star in Minecraft Movie, a live action film inspired by the popular video game. As The Hollywood Reporter confirms, Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess will direct the project.

Dune producers Mary Parent and Roy Lee will produce Minecraft with Jill Messick, who will receive posthumous credit for her involvement in the development of the film before her death in 2018. Executive producers include Jon Berg, Cale Boyter and Jon Spaihts. The game hails from Sweden’s Mojang Studios, with Mojang’s Lydia Winters and Vu Bui producing the film on behalf of the company. Minecraft, which debuted in 2011, is a video game that allows players to use blocks to create structures and worlds. The game was hugely successful, reaching 100 million users a few years after launch and helping Microsoft acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014.

Warner Bros. has been developing a video game-based project for years; in the past, possible directors involved have also included Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney. Now the name confirmed as director is that of Jared Hess. In recent times, public interest in video game-inspired films has yielded hits such as Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds, which is preparing to become a franchise, and with the hit Sonic 2 – The Film, a sequel that is hitting the international box office. We will soon find Jason Momoa in the cinecomic Warner Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, out in March 2023.
