0

Red Queen Season 2 (Reina Roja 2: Loba Negra) solves the case of Lola Moreno and the Russian mafia but makes clear that this investigation was never the real game. While Antonia Scott and Jon Gutiérrez tried to discover what had happened to the money stolen from Aslan Orlov, Mr. White was once again several moves ahead. Episode 6, titled A Sunrise—Gather All the Fronts in a Cabin: Lola, Antonia, Jon, Aslan’s men, and the mysterious Black Wolf. There we discovered what Yuri was really hiding, why Lola was so obsessed with getting her dog back, and that the hitwoman we met during the season was not who she seemed.

But the important blow comes later, when everything seems to be over. Sandra is still alive, and this time their target isn’t Antonia, but Jon. From here we enter fully into spoilers for the end of Red Queen: Black Wolf. The second season of Red Queen, subtitled Black Wolf, wraps up with a cliffhanger that pulls the series’ biggest unresolved threat back into the spotlight. Before getting into the finale, here’s a quick refresher on how season one set everything up.

A Quick Recap of Red Queen Season 1!

In Red Queen, Antonia Scott (Vicky Luengo), described as the smartest person in the world, is recruited by a man known as Mentor for a police mission. Jon Gutiérrez (Hovik Keuchkerian) is assigned as her partner. Together they chase Fajardo and Sandra, a woman who has been posing as Fajardo’s daughter, a lie exposed when they find the real daughter’s grave.

After Carla Ortiz and Antonia’s own son are kidnapped, Antonia and Jon end up in the tunnels beneath Madrid. There, Jon kills Fajardo, and Antonia makes Sandra step on a bomb, though her supposed body is never actually shown. The entire operation, it turns out, was orchestrated by Mr. White, a man Antonia comes to fear after her husband falls into a coma.

Red Queen Season 2 Ending Explained: What Happens in the First Five Episodes of Black Wolf?

The season opens with a dead woman found in Madrid Río, while Antonia stays fixated on Sandra and suffers hallucinations. Mentor sends her and Jon to Marbella, where Lola Moreno has just survived an attack in a shopping center. Her partner, Yuri, who works as treasurer for the Russian mafia led by Aslan Orlov, is found dead at his villa.

Antonia and Jon follow the trail of Funduk, a type of Russian nut that Yuri imported through Marbella. That lead takes them to the port, where they find a shipping container holding several girls who were bound and left for dead, with just one survivor.

Along the way, Antonia admits to Jon that she uses a tool called Heimdall, a European surveillance system that listens to and collects everything, which Jon doesn’t like at all.

Then the Black Wolf enters the story: a female hitwoman who wipes out Aslan’s men but spares Antonia’s life. Meanwhile, Lola continues running from Marbella; the series reveals that inspectors Romero and Belgrano are hiding something shady, and Aslan kidnaps and tortures Antonia until Jon manages to rescue her.

What Was Lola’s Dog Really Hiding?

For much of the season, it seems like Lola risks too much simply to get her dog back. Antonia ends up understanding that the animal is much more important than everyone thought. Yuri, who had been robbing Aslan, had implanted in the dog a device containing bitcoins and documentation capable of incriminating the criminal organization.

That’s why Aslan needed to locate Lola and why she insisted on getting the animal back, even when doing so meant putting herself in danger again. All the pieces end up converging in the cabin. Romero and Belgrano, whose corrupt businesses have also come to light, attack Lola’s police transfer, and the situation ends up attracting both Antonia and Jon, as well as Aslan’s men and Black Wolf, there.

Who Really Is the Black Wolf?

Here comes one of the main twists of the outcome. The woman we have known as Black Wolf during the season is not the real murderer who used that name.

Antonia discovers that the real Black Wolf was the woman whose body appeared at the beginning of the season in Madrid Río. The new assassin had killed her and taken her place, appropriating an identity whose reputation allowed her to work and move between criminal organizations without anyone questioning who she really was. The imposter also does not maintain a special loyalty to Aslan. In the battle of the cabin, he ends up facing his men, and when he has the opportunity to kill Lola, he agrees to let her live in exchange for what really interests him: the device hidden in the dog and the money it contains. He thus manages to escape with his reward while Antonia and Jon remain with Lola.

Who Dies in Season 2?

The season’s body count is long. Yuri is killed by Romero, while Lola’s bodyguard and a mall security guard are shot dead by an envoy of Aslan’s.

The Black Wolf kills several of Aslan’s men, and Lola kills the owner of a pawn shop. Romero is also responsible for killing the officers inside the van that was transporting Lola and Aslan’s man to Madrid. In the cabin, the housekeeper and Aslan’s man die at the Black Wolf’s hands. Aslan himself dies in the final confrontation, which involves the dog being thrown at him.

Antonia also confirms that the Black Wolf she’s been dealing with is actually an impostor who killed the real one in Madrid Río, whose body was discovered at the start of the season.

Surviving the season are Antonia, Jon, Lola, Romero, Belgrano, and the impostor Black Wolf.

How Does Aslan Orlov Die?

The Russian boss reaches the final stretch, determined to recover the money that Yuri had stolen from him and eliminate everyone who could link him to his crimes. But its ending is much less glorious than one would expect.

During the confrontation, Lola’s dog lunges at Aslan. The gangster manages to shoot him, but the attack also ends up causing his own death.

The irony is evident: the same animal inside, which had been searching for what it had been searching for all season was hidden and ended up participating directly in its fall. With Aslan dead and his men neutralized, the Russian mafia conflict is practically resolved. However, Antonia immediately begins to understand that this case had just been another layer of something much bigger.

What Happens to Jon at the End of the Case?

The investigation leaves the relationship between Antonia and Jon quite affected. Jon has discovered that Antonia secretly uses Heimdall, a huge European surveillance system capable of accessing information that should never be available to a single person. For him, Antonia’s methods have begun to cross too many lines. After surviving the cabin confrontation, Jon tells him that he plans to leave the police force.

It doesn’t mean that he stops loving Antonia, but it does mean that he needs to get away from a dynamic that is increasingly difficult for him to accept. At the same time, Antonia makes another painful decision: she finally agrees to disconnect Marcos, her husband, who was still in a coma after Mr. White’s attack. It seems that both protagonists are trying to close the stages, and then Mr. White appears again.

Was Mr. White behind?

Yes, although it doesn’t mean that he absolutely controlled every murder of the season.

Romero kills Yuri for his own reasons, Aslan runs his criminal organization, and the fake Black Wolf has her own interests. But Mr. White has used all that chaos to continue his personal confrontation with Antonia.

Confirmation comes most cruelly. Antonia calls the hospital to ask about the only young woman who had survived the container where the organization’s victims were found. They tell him that he has just died. Immediately afterwards, he receives a message from Mr. White. Mentor confirms her suspicions: what happened is once again part of the game that White has been building around her for some time. Antonia then understands that Jon may become the next target and runs towards her house. It’s too late.

Is Sandra Alive?

Yeah.

The first season had already left that possibility open because Antonia managed to take her to one of the tunnel pumps, but his body never appeared.

The end of Black Wolf definitively confirms it.

Jon has met Tomás and calmly goes out into the street when a vehicle appears. A young woman dressed as Little Red Riding Hood comes down from him and approaches him and injects a substance into his neck. Jon falls almost immediately. The woman is Sandra. Antonia gets to see her in the distance but can’t stop Jon from being put into the vehicle and taken away. Sandra not only survived the explosion; she continues to work within Mr. White’s plan.

Why Is Jon Kidnapped?

Jon is probably the most important person in Antonia’s current life, and that is precisely why he is the perfect target. Mr. White has been attacking Antonia in a very specific way for some time. He doesn’t just intend to kill her but to force her to participate in a game designed to show that she can anticipate each of her decisions.

Sandra was one of his pieces in the first season. The Russian mafia, the murdered Red Queens, and the events of Black Wolf drive towards him again. Now he has something even better to force Antonia to continue playing. He has Jon. The kidnapping thus turns the season finale into the direct beginning of the next story.

What Prepares the Ending for “White King”?

Red Queen: Black Wolf adapts the second book of the Juan Gómez-Jurado trilogy, so it remains White King to close the main story. The third season has already been filmed and will once again pit Antonia against Mr. White. The finish leaves practically all the necessary pieces in place. Sandra is still alive. Mr. White continues to pull the strings. Jon is kidnapped. And Antonia has also just lost her husband after deciding to disconnect him.

That’s why the closure of Black Wolf doesn’t really work as the resolution of the season but as the moment in which Mr. White manages to make the conflict definitively stop being professional and become something personal again. Antonia has solved Lola’s mystery, discovered the dog’s secret, and survived Aslan and the fake Black Wolf. But all that was secondary. When she thinks the case is over, Sandra shows up, kidnaps Jon in front of her, and returns Antonia to exactly the place where Mr. White wanted to have her. The board is prepared for White King.

What Does the Ending Mean for Season 3?

The finale’s final beat puts the focus right back on Sandra, a villain Antonia believed she’d killed at the end of season one. Her return, with Jon as her captive, ties the season’s standalone case back to the larger conspiracy of Mr. White and gives Antonia a deeply personal reason to keep going. It also leaves Jon’s plan to quit the police force in limbo, and puts Antonia in the position of having to rescue a partner she’d just watched pull away.

What Novel Is It Based On?

The source material I was given breaks off before this section, so there’s nothing in it to draw from. For what it’s worth, the series adapts Juan Gómez-Jurado’s Reina Roja trilogy of novels, and Black Wolf corresponds to the second book, Loba Negra. If you want the section filled out with more detail, send over the missing text.
