House Of The Dragon: What Is The History Of The Series? Here What We Know So Far!

The first House of the Dragon trailer has been released, giving the best insight so far into the story and characters of the House Targaryen-centric Game of Thrones prequel. Game of Thrones controversially ended in 2019, but despite the divisions and backlash, it was far from the last time HBO took viewers to Westeros.

In its near decade of existence, Game of Thrones has grown into one of the greatest TV series of all time, and so it is only natural that there are plenty of spinoffs in the works, the first of which is House of the Dragon. Westeros is ruled by a Targaryen King and will be for the foreseeable future from now on, and House of The Dragon will have 17 dragons, a stark contrast to the three that Daenerys Targaryen had.

What Timeline Of House Of The Dragon Compared To Game Of Thrones?

The history of House of the Dragon HBO begins 200 years before Game of Thrones. It had been speculated that events would begin about 170 years before Game of Thrones premiered, based on the year the Targaryen Civil War began.

House of the Dragon has now revealed that the series will follow some of the adult Civil War-time characters, like Emma D’Arcy’s Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, while they are still children. As they will also be seen in adulthood, it is likely that the young versions of the characters will only be shown briefly.

But it will give enough information about the strained relationship between the Targaryens and the budding alliances that would play a pivotal role during the Targaryen Civil War some 20 years later. Once House of the Dragon catches up with the actual Dance of the Dragons between Rhaenrya and Aegon II Targaryen, the series’ timeline will be 129 AC, which is 169 years before the Game of Thrones timeline of 298 AC.

Who Are The Main Characters?

The Starks and Lannisters are minor actors in House of the Dragon, which will therefore focus on members of the Targaryen family and their allies until the Civil War. The House of the Dragon character who will likely be placed as the main protagonist is Rhaenyra Targaryen, the eldest child of King Viserys I, who was made heiress after the death of her older brothers.

Matt Smith’s character, Daemon Targaryen, younger brother of King Viserys I and uncle of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, is a hot topic. Like most Targaryens, he is short-tempered and has a complicated relationship with his brother and his claims to the throne.

Another key character in House of The Dragon is Alicent Hightower, Viserys’ second wife, with whom he had several sons. Alicent notably developed a significant rivalry with Viserys’ daughter, Rhaenyra, as the two intended to rule Westeros. His father, Otto Hightower, also plays an important role in House Of The Dragon as Hand of the King of Viserys, who supports Alicent in his advocacy for his son Aegon II’s accession to the Iron Throne.

House Of The Dragon will also feature Corlys Velaryon, also known as the Sea Serpent, who rules House Velaryon as an accomplished sailor. After several other affronts from Viserys, Corlys allied with Daemon and then Rhaenyra when her son Laenor became her first husband, with whom she had several children.

What Is The Story Of House Of The Dragon?

The story of House Of The Dragon , traces the events leading up to the Targaryen Civil War, also known as the “Dance of the Dragons”, which lasted from 129 to 131 AC. After the death of King Viserys I, his daughter Rhaenyra, whom the king has long designated as his rightful successor, and his son Aegon II, his eldest male, compete for the Iron Throne. The Dance of the Dragons divides the Seven Kingdoms into two loyalty factions: the “green” and the “black”.

After Viserys’ death, a select council met to determine the ascendancy of Rhaenyra or Aegon the Elder, which left the main players in the kingdom divided between allegiances. Viserys’ death was kept hidden from Rhaenyra for the first week, giving the Green Council time to hastily crown Aegon II as king.

When Rhaenyra discovered the betrayal of her siblings and supposed allies, she vowed revenge, which led to her own coronation and a capital civil war that divided Westeros to determine which Targaryen deserved the Throne of iron.
