It’s What’s Inside Ending Explained: Plot Summary

Greg Jardin’s It’s What’s Inside at first seems to be a diversion from the film itself, it focuses on the relationship of a young couple of engaged couples in difficulty. The spark between Shelby (Brittany O’Grady) and Cyrus (James Morosini) has faded, but the girl is ready to restart things by surprising her boyfriend with a little role-play and wearing a long, attractive blonde wig, unfortunately, it doesn’t work. The embarrassing situation that triggers their umpteenth argument as a couple is somehow put aside by the imminent wedding of an old friend, Reuben (Devon Terrell) in fact who is about to marry his girlfriend Sophia. In anticipation of that marital union called with the hashtag “Reuphia”, in the style of “Bennifer” and “Brangelina”, the future groom decides to invite some of his old college friends to join him for his bachelor party and where the bride-to-be who will not be present.

On the way to the reunion, which will take place at a gothic mansion that belonged to Reuben’s late mother and bohemian artist, Shelby scrolls through the Instagram of another former student, Nikki (Alycia Debnam-Carey), who has since reinvented herself as a seemingly have-it-all influencer and everyone envies her. Rounding out the group of friends are Dennis (Gavin Leatherwood), Brooke (Reina Hardesty), and Maya (Nina Bloomgarden), as well as the enigmatic Forbes (David Thompson). However, the boy who has always been considered the nerd of the group when he suddenly appears at midnight has something special in his possession that will make this a night to remember forever. The object in question is an old suitcase that inside reveals a mechanism, without explaining too much, a sort of party game where everyone has to play a role.

The key point, however, is that the bodies are exchanged between the players, and what appears to be a way to do something different from the usual, such as getting drunk and smoking, will give free rein to the primal instincts of the eight players. The situation will become completely complicated when two of the participants suddenly die and the game will become a matter of survival among the remaining six where some of the protagonists will take advantage of the absurd experience to change their lives. When approaching It’s What’s Inside, try to memorize all the characters’ names and key characteristics as soon as possible. There’s the anxious and vulnerable Shelby (O’Grady), in crisis over what she believes is the disastrous sex life with her boyfriend, Cyrus (Morosini), who constantly falls back on porn. Dennis (Leatherwood), a daddy’s boy with a trust fund, is making his way in life, but here we discover that he shares a curious past with Nikki (Debnam-Carey), a social media influencer.

Then there’s the artistic and eclectic Brooke (Hardesty) and Nina (Bloomgarden), whose penchant for Buddhism and introspection sets her apart from the pack. Everyone has shown up for a bachelor party of sorts to celebrate their friend Rueben (Terrell) before his wedding the next day. The fun and games quickly take a turn for the worse when their nerdy friend Forbes, once an outcast from the group, shows up at the party. He seems to have his agenda for the evening and is eager to use his latest invention straight from Silicon Valley: a body-swapping machine. The first round of random exchanges is a great source of fun for the group: no one knows who the other is, but they can guess; if someone’s identity is guessed, they must confess and stick a photograph of who they really are on their clothes. It is this, along with different lighting cues and editing techniques, that will cleverly allow the viewer to know who is in whose body. But what happens if they start lying? Everyone could be in everyone else’s body, and the characters’ paranoia and suspicion lead the viewer into a wonderfully topsy-turvy house of mirrors, forcing the characters, and us, to keep track of everyone and everything that is revealed.

It’s What’s Inside Ending Explained:

In the first round, everyone has a good time, especially Cyrus, who, thanks to Forbes pretending to be Cyrus in Dennis’ body, can use Reuben’s body to kiss Nikki, whom he has long desired. Without further incidents, the friends return to their respective bodies. While most, including the fearful Shelby, propose another round, Cyrus refuses to participate. After an argument with Shelby, Cyrus agrees to play but warns her of Forbes’ first deception and they agree on a signal to recognize each other. The second round begins and Cyrus, who is in Forbes’ body, repeats the signal desperately to find his girlfriend until he identifies her in Nikki’s body. As Shelby (Nikki), Cyrus (Forbes), Nikki (Brooke), Dennis (Cyrus), Maya (Shelby) and Forbes (Reuben) argue, Reuben (Dennis) and Brooke (Maya) fall from the balcony to their deaths. The rest of the group is at a loss. Nikki (Brooke) suggests calling the police, but Forbes (Reuben) objects. Cyrus (Forbes) insists on switching bodies again, but the real Maya and Dennis refuse to be the only ones to suffer.

The argument escalates to the point where Dennis reveals that Cyrus is in a nine-year relationship with Shelby only because Nikki rejected him. Cyrus counters by mentioning that Dennis did nothing with his life and that he should be thankful for staying in the body of someone like Reuben. In revenge, Dennis (Cyrus) calls the police and “confesses” that he caused the deaths of two of his friends. Forbes (Reuben) takes advantage of the distraction to escape, but Nikki (Brooke) knocks him out and ties her up with the help of Cyrus (Forbes). Shelby (Nikki) also knows how the machine works, so they think they’re safe, but she refuses to change. Nikki claims her body and another argument ensues. Cyrus tries to convince her, but Brooke’s (Maya) intervention ruins everything.

Her plan for revenge also includes Reuben, after she finds out that he blamed her and Forbes for the fight that happened years ago.

Therefore, she intends to ruin his marriage. But it is a coincidence that Reuben dies while in Dennis’ body. But, in reality, as already mentioned, no one realized that Forbes never attended this party, as Beatrice had been in his body since the beginning. In the psychiatric facility, the girl took her brother’s body and left him there. In the finale of “It’s What’s Inside Beatrice manages to control the machine and carries out her revenge, with the body swap: Dennis in Forbes’ body, Beatrice in Nikki’s, Maya in Brooke’s, Shelby in hers, Cyrus in his, and Nikki in Reuben’s. Also, Beatrice manages to take the money from Dennis’s trust fund and frames Cyrus. After that, she pushes Dennis to his death. Now the girl wants to start a new life with all that money, as an influencer on Nikki’s social media.

Who Gets Their Real Bodies Back?

Before the police arrive, Shelby proposes to Cyrus to stay in Nikki’s body and put him in Reuben’s body, he accepts, but Nikki is not willing to lose her body, so she uses her peanut allergy to make Forbes take care of the last switch. The officers enter the house and who returned to their body? Dennis stayed in Forbes’ body, Nikki in Reuben’s body, Maya in Brooke’s body, while Shelby and Cyrus returned to their bodies. Cyrus was imprisoned for the deaths of “Dennis” and “Maya” and was accused of transferring Dennis’ money to an offshore account.

Who is The Real Culprit?

Beatrice, Forbes’ sister. At the beginning of What Lies Inside, it is mentioned that Forbes and Dennis fought at a party because the trust fund boy cheated on Nikki with Beatrice, to whom he made several promises of love. Of course, Dennis denied everything and caused Beatrice to have an episode that led to her being admitted to a psychiatric hospital. When Forbes visited his sister and told her about the machine he developed with his friends, Beatrice saw the opportunity for revenge and took it, meaning the person who came to the pre-wedding party with the machine was Beatrice. Before the police arrive, Beatrice stays in Nikki’s body with Dennis’ money. Why was Shelby the least affected? She didn’t attend the party where Beatrice was made fun of, so she wasn’t one of Forbes’ sister’s targets. Why didn’t Shelby testify in Cyrus’ favor? The proposal to stay in Nikki’s body was a test and her boyfriend failed.

Is Shelby Really Shelby?

In the finale of It’s What’s Inside, we wonder if Shelby is really her. This happens when she goes to visit Cyrus in prison. Here she reveals to him that the proposal to stay in Nikki’s body was a test for him and his response proved that he was lying to her about his feelings. For this reason, she does not intend to help him and says she is convinced that the game was fake and that he pushed Dennis and Brooke towards their deaths, after having transferred the former’s money. However, it seems that Shelby is really her.
