Sky Rojo is the name of a sofa. A red leather sofa, a shiny red. It is the one found in the Club delle Brose, the brothel at the center of the story that we will tell you in the review of Sky Rojo, season 2, the series available in streaming on Netflix from 23 July. Sky Rojo is the latest TV series created by Álex Pina, King Midas of Spanish seriality, the author of the very successful La casa di carta and the less fortunate White Lines . It tells the story of a brothel, and of three beautiful prostitutes with a heart of gold to whom life has reserved a destiny of abuse and confinement.

The second season starts a few seconds after where the first ended. Coral ( Verónica Sánchez ), after escaping, went back to the brothel where she had left, to try to ” free ” the other girls who are still there, at the mercy of the sordid Romeo, who kidnapped them to keep them in check his passports and noted, in an accounting book, the debts he thought the girls would have incurred. Moises and Christian, meanwhile, are chasing Wendy ( Lali Espósito ) and Gina ( Yany Prado ), who has found herself pregnant, undecided between their job, and the right thing to do, that is to rebel against Romeo.
As happened in Money Heist, also in Sky Rojo the two seasons can be considered as a single season divided into two parts, due to production or distribution needs. The season 2 of Sky Rojo is in effect a single body with the first, which ended in an open, suspended, just to cast the vision of the second, came just four months of the first. There is no break between the two, nor a different reading, a new starting point to restart the story. It is clear how then the judgment of this season 2 follows what we told you in the review of Sky Rojo season 1. It is undoubtedly a guilty pleasur *, a binge watching vision, also thanks to the speed of the episodes (we have seen the first 4), lasting 25 minutes each. It is a series that undoubtedly entertains and amuses, by virtue of continuous twists (a cliffhanger closes each episode) and the hyperkinetic nature of the characters, in constant action.
But it is also a series that has its own superficiality, which does not deepen the characters enough, instead aiming more and more to excess (a 17 cm strip of cocaine, an Ave Maria pronounced during a sexual act), to the effect scene, rather than a coherent and complete narrative. It is as if the formula of Money Heist , the continuous raising of the bar of the difficulty and the continuous twist, which worked there because it was inserted in an original story and with iconic characters and their way in-depth, outside the Bank of Spain, without the Professor, Dali’s suits and masks, it would no longer work. It is as if, to use a metaphor that remains in the world he created, the audacious blow has succeeded him once but that, trying it again, has failed.
Sky Rojo 2 Review: The Review
Watching Sky Rojo is like watching a racing race on a Formula 1 circuit, in one of those circuits where, whoever is in front of everyone, in the end completes the path and is behind the others, and doubles them. In Sky Rojo, in fact, whoever is chased often becomes a pursuer, whoever is prey becomes a hunter, and vice versa, in an obstacle course where you no longer know who is chasing whom. Yes, it is a game that changes constantly, and that allows you not to get bored. But that, in the long run, seems to be repetitive. As well as the continuous scenes of high and excess. It is a series that owes a lot, or at least would like, to Kill Bill’s Quentin Tarantino and his Bride. Of which here you will see an updated version of the famous living burial …
Speaking of Money Heist, do you remember Nairobi and its ” matriarchy begins “? We mention it for two reasons. The first is because, beyond Money Heist, Álex Pina no longer seems able to draw such charismatic and successful characters. In Sky Rojo it is better than in White Lines, and its intangible characters. The three girls, even if not deepened properly, are charismatic and well interpreted. You immediately feel empathy, tenderness, attraction for these Thelma, Louise and Louise. But mostly stereotyped characters move around them. But the point is above all another. If, in Nairobi, but also in other female characters, it was possible to feel a respect and a love for women, a desire to side with them, the same thing should happen in Sky Rojo.
If this is so in the premises, it is not so in the facts. Because, in some recurring and insistent scenes, there is a violence that is perhaps too complacent, more aesthetic than real, of course, but at times unbearable and unbearable. It may be that, within a series that wants to denounce the situation of prostitution in Spain, it is functional to the story. But in some really strong scenes, the game seems a bit too pushy, too smug. And in times like these it’s something to watch out for. Does matriarchy begin? Not here. At least as far as Sky Rojo is concerned , not yet.
the first four episodes enter an unforgivable loop for a series that only has eight episodes per season of less than half an hour each. They chase them, they chase them. And start over. Each chapter is increasingly reminiscent of a comic strip of the coyote and the roadrunner … A dynamic so obvious that even the writers make a direct reference in the fourth episode.
