Kimetsu no Yaiba Season 4 Ending Explained: An Epic Farewell Before The Infinite Fortress

Kimetsu no Yaiba has proven to be one of the most highly-rated series in recent years. Its best weapons have been the exquisite animation by Ufotable, a breathtaking soundtrack and the narrative potential of Koyoharu Gotouge’s story, conventional in some points but very effective in connecting with its audience and exciting. These ingredients have made Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, a continuous success throughout its four seasons and the three films released. The Pillar Training arc has indeed been shorter than usual and less surprising. The plot hadn’t advanced much except for the revelations of Giyu Tomioka and Gyomei Himejima’s past. However, the last two episodes of the season have been fundamental for the future of the series and have given us a lot to talk about, especially the eighth one.

The seventh chapter ended with Muzan Kibutsuji’s entrance into the Ubuyashiki residence. Everything indicated that, a week later, we would have the long-awaited face-to-face between the King of Demons and the Boss of the Demon Slayer Corps. The result has not disappointed me. The conversation has highlighted the conflict between two points of view that have been at odds for centuries: generosity versus greed, kindness versus bloodlust, and life versus death.

Demon Slayers have disrupted Muzan’s plans for a thousand years, though they have failed to kill him or his Upper Moons. Ten centuries later, upon seeing Kagaya Ubuyashiki before him, the being most feared by all of humanity could only feel contempt for his deteriorating state of health. This illness of the Pattern has an explanation: his lineage is linked to Kibutsuji, and due to the sin committed by him, the entire lineage was cursed, and their children were condemned to die shortly after birth. To ensure a future, they began to marry women from priestly families, but this only served to prolong their lives into their thirties. From that moment on, the Ubuyashiki were tasked with the mission of destroying Muzan and became the leaders of the Demon Slayer Corps for generations. A thousand years later, Kibutsuji is closer than ever to achieving absolute immortality if he manages to capture Nezuko and absorb her ability to resist the Sun. But before finding her, he decides to strike a tremendous blow by eliminating the Pattern and sabotaging the hunters’ morale.

However, this conversation also proves that the killing will be in vain. Despite his blindness, Ubuyashiki can see inside Muzan and knows that his goal is eternity, but the only thing he believes can last forever are people’s feelings. The nature of human beings and their goodness, as well as the resentment that has developed against demons for hundreds of years. Therefore, the death of the Patron will serve to reaffirm the determination of the Pillars and the rest of the Corps to exterminate the demons. They are two opposite sides. If the Patron dies, the will of his group will not perish, for it is shared by many and can only be achieved collectively. If Muzan is eliminated, the entire line of demons will also be eliminated. He cannot really count on anyone, as his vassals fear him or would want to take his place and gain his power.

The conversation ends with all the cards on the table. Meanwhile, the Pillars rush to the Ubuyashiki residence. However, they will not arrive in time. The mansion is blown up before Muzan manages to execute the Boss, who sacrifices himself as a decoy along with his wife and two of his daughters. The tremendous explosion leaves Kibutsuji badly injured, although he manages to partially regenerate. However, some seeds of flesh explode in the form of thorns that pierce his body and leave him immobilized. This is a blood technique from Tamayo, the demon woman who managed to escape from Muzan’s control and decided to help humanity with her medical knowledge.

The surprise attack allowed her to inject a drug to turn the demons into humans, something that may have many implications in the final battle. But there is something else because this distraction also allowed Himejima to attack with everything and cut off the Demon King’s head. The Rock Pillar was the only one to whom the Boss confided his feelings about Muzan’s possible visit. It was also he who tried for years to convince him to have security in his mansion, although Ubuyashiki never saw the need to reserve any of the best hunters to protect a single man.  Himejima could have been part of the ambush, but it did not have the desired result: the Demon King cannot be killed even by cutting off his head, the only thing to do is fight him until the Sun rises.

The Battle of Infinity Castle Begins?

Muzan manages to regenerate after Tamayo and Himejima’s attack. At that moment, the rest of the Pillars and Tanjiro Kamado arrive. They are surprised to see that before them they have the person responsible for so much suffering for a thousand years, the objective they have pursued since they became demon hunters. Their Patron has died, but they are all gathered to face their greatest adversary. However, Kibutsuji also had an ace up his sleeve. Probably through the power of Nakime, one of the Upper Moons, several portals open under the feet of the Pillars and Tanjiro. Also all the demon hunters, including Zenitsu Inosuke and Genya, none of them were in the mansion. They are all dragged to the Infinite Fortress and Muzan personally challenges Tanjiro to try to finish him off. Thus concludes the fourth season, in an apotheotic way that serves as a prelude to the final battle. This event can be seen in the form of three films confirmed by Crunchyroll. The release dates are still unknown, although it might not be long before the first of the feature films in the trilogy.
