Rebel Moon: Everything We Know So Far About Zack Snyder’s Sci-Fi Project

Zack Snyder is following up on “Army of the Dead” with “Rebel Moon,” an unique sci-fi movie that the director said is inspired by Akira Kurosawa films and “Star Wars.” Per an exclusive in The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder, who will co-write and direct the upcoming movie, has set the film at Netflix, which was also home to the director’s zombie action-adventure movie, “Army of the Dead.”

Snyder has long had an interest in creating a movie inspired by Kurosawa and “Star Wars.” News broke in 2013 that Snyder was developing a Kurosawa-inspired “Star Wars” film that might’ve been loosely inspired by the classic 1954 movie “Seven Samurai” where Jedi Knights and lightsabers can be used as a substitute of ronin and samurai swords. Though the project never came to fruition, Snyder is moving ahead with its core story and themes for “Rebel Moon,” albeit without any “Star Wars” connections.

Rebel Moon

Rebel Moon originated as a Star Wars concept that Snyder pitched to Lucasfilm earlier than Disney bought the company in 2012. The spin-off was conceived as a follow-up to the events of Return of the Jedi, with new Jedi warriors setting out on a dangerous mission. Whereas the project by no means got here to fruition, Snyder confirmed that he was remodeling the premise into an original movie again in May.
