Borderlands: The Trailer for The Film Based On The Video Game

The trailer for Borderlands, the film based on the video game made by Eli Roth, has been published online. The video also shows the release date of the title, which will arrive in theaters in August. Lionsgate began working on a film based on the Borderlands video game nearly 10 years ago, with Eli Roth joining the project in 2020. After a long period of waiting, thanks to the strikes in Hollywood, and the series of reshoots led by Tim Miller, the film has finally materialized and will hit the screens next August.

We knew Eli Roth well from horror films (Hostel, or without going any further the recent Black Friday), as well as some acting performances similar to what he did in Inglourious Basterds. His emergence into the leagues of entertainment cinema for all audiences has been more punctual, although The House with a Clock on its Wall had its fans and in fact, the germ of Borderlands can be seen in this film. This fantasy film had Cate Blanchett and Jack Black in the cast. The same ones that now meet in Borderlands. It is a big-budget film that Roth has orchestrated under a profitable license from Gearbox Software: Borderlands was originally a trilogy of video games that began in 2009 and is highly recognized in the industry both for its unprejudiced fun and for its cutting-edge cel-shading graphics, following the spirit of the cartoon.

But the Borderlands movie will not be animated. It aims more to be a blockbuster with the naughty humor of James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad. The tone suits the proposal, to tell the truth, and it aims to maintain the streak that Hollywood has in terms of video game adaptations (which historically it has been so bad at). Beyond The Last of Us on television, there we have Super Mario Bros. The film was the second highest-grossing premiere of 2023. Premiere where, by the way, Black also dropped into voice Bowser, just as he will do in Borderlands while he prepares to participate in another upcoming film based on a video game: Minecraft, with Jason Momoa.

Borderlands Cast

Borderlands features an all-star cast led by two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett. The plot centers on Lilith (Blanhett), a renegade with a mysterious past who returns to her home planet, Pandora, in search of the missing daughter of the film’s villain, Atlas (Édgar Ramirez). Along her journey, she will join an unexpected group of allies that includes a mercenary (Kevin Hart), a young demolitions expert (Ariana Greenblatt), an unconventional scientist (Jamie Lee Curtis), and the robot Claptrap (Jack Black), known for his sharp wit.

This adaptation of the Gearbox video game released in 2009 initially featured direction by Eli Roth, known for his work on genre films such as Hostel (2005) and, more recently, Black Friday (2023). However, Borderlands had to take additional shots last year. As a result of scheduling conflicts, Tim Miller (Deadpool, 2016) took Roth’s place in the director’s chair for this last stage. Coinciding with previous reports, the Borderlands movie reaffirmed its release in the middle of the year, with a date agreed for August 8 in Argentina. Meanwhile, in the field of video games, leaks, and rumors have circulated about a fourth installment. A release that coincides with the movie would make sense to many, but Gearbox has yet to make an official announcement on the matter.

Double Oscar winner Cate Blanchett transforms into a dystopian heroine in Borderlands, the live-action adaptation of Gearbox’s renowned video game franchise. Directed by Eli Roth, the film seeks to repeat the successful formula of uniting the action of the games with an intense narrative. The first look at the production reveals the attention to detail in the characterization of the characters. Blanchett and her metamorphosis into the iconic Lilith do not go unnoticed, with a notable fidelity to the original appearance of her role.

What is the Story Plot of Borderlands?

Roth’s film will be mostly faithful to the video game’s plot and character design. Something that can be seen from the images that Lionsgate has been showing, but above all from the official synopsis: “Lilith, an evil bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy.” “His mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas, the most powerful bastard in the universe”. Indeed, the planet is called Pandora, like the one inhabited by the Na’vi from Avatar (since the Borderlands video game was released the same year as James Cameron‘s film, no one could be accused of plagiarism). But let’s continue with the synopsis: “Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a strange team: Roland, a veteran mercenary with a mission; Tiny Tina, a savage pre-teen wrecker; Krieg, Tina’s muscular protector; Tannis, the strange scientist who has seen everything, and Claptrap, a smart robot. Together, these surprising heroes must face an alien species and dangerous bandits to discover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets”. “The fate of the universe may be in their hands, but they will fight for something else: each other.” The same description already hints that the marginalized members of this group will forge family ties.
