On April 27, 2024, the death of Mica Miller, a 30-year-old woman linked for much of her life to a church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, became the beginning of a case that would end up reaching national repercussions in the United States. His body was found in the Lumber River State Park in North Carolina. Shortly before, Mica had called 911 to communicate where she was and announce her intention to take her own life. Authorities concluded that his death had been a suicide and they ruled out the intervention of another person. But that didn’t close the story.
The complaints that Mica had made before she died, the accusations against her husband, the pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller, and a subsequent federal investigation ended up putting the case in a very different perspective. That is the material he reconstructs in Death of the Pastor’s Wife (Death of the Pastor’s Wife), a three-episode docuseries released by Netflix on August 26, 2026. The production uses previously unreleased recordings and testimonies from family and friends to tell both who Mica was and the deterioration of her marriage and the events preceding her death.
Death of the Pastor’s Wife Netflix Real Case? From Teenager of The Congregation to Wife of The Pastor?
Mica Francis was born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1994 and later moved with her family to Myrtle Beach. There, he began going to Solid Rock Church while still a teenager. Religion quickly occupied a fundamental place in his life and, thanks also to his qualities as a singer, he ended up becoming a well-known figure within the congregation. The pastor of that church was John-Paul Miller, considerably older than her. Mica initially married another member of the congregation, Jeremy Deas, in a ceremony that Miller officiated.
Over time, Mica began working as the pastor’s assistant, and the relationship between the two became increasingly closer. The two were married to other people when their romantic relationship began. After breaking up their respective marriages, Mica and JP ended up getting married. The couple publicly projected a very different image from the one that relatives and people close to Mica would later describe.
A Marriage Marked By Serious Accusations?
One of the central aspects of the docuseries is the accusations of coercive control, harassment, and manipulation that surrounded the marriage. According to Mica’s family and friends, Miller’s position as a pastor and spiritual reference created a deeply unequal relationship from the beginning. Over the years, the marriage deteriorated until Mica decided to separate. The situation worsened considerably during that process.
Mica went to the police on different occasions, reporting her husband’s behavior. She claimed she was followed and harassed and even told officers that he feared for his life. Tracking devices related to their vehicles were also located, and there were reports of damage to their tires. The conflict was no longer limited, therefore, to subsequent statements by family and friends. There was a previous history of calls, complaints and contacts with the authorities made by Mica herself.
A Marriage Full of Secrets?
Mica and John Paul met through Solid Rock Church. At the time, she was a teenager, and John Paul was a married man and father of 5 young children; Mica began working as a nanny for the family; plus, she used to sing in church, which led to her receiving more attention.
At 18, Mica married her first husband, but in 2015 she began a relationship with John Paul (when she was 20 and he was 35), and two years later, the two divorced their partners and married. According to the magazine TIME, what jumps out of all of this is not just the age difference, but the fact that John Paul was the pastor at the church Mica grew up in, so she saw him as an authority figure from the beginning, and that’s why it couldn’t be a well-balanced relationship.
“Sierra Francis, Mica’s sister, told the Myrtle Beach Sun News that she believed John-Paul «had [Mica] in his sights since he was young» and that he had manipulated her to gain her trust. John-Paul always maintained that they had a «great marriage» and a «wonderful» relationship. Michael Francis, Mica Miller’s father, confirmed that the family never viewed Mica’s relationship with John-Paul” favorably, the site says.
According to reports, John Paul was the one who had the power in the relationship, and Mica’s life revolved around him, but many could see that it was a toxic relationship. Eventually, several divorce and separation petitions were filed (by the two), and things began to escalate from there.
Mica called the police on several occasions to report that someone had cut the tires of her car with a knife, that someone was following her, and on several occasions she said she was afraid and thought her life was in danger, although she did not It is clear if all of this was connected to John Paul or someone else. But Mica is known to have told several people that John Paul was violent and abusive, and that she even sought a restraining order against him. At one point she told her sister that John Paul was going to kill her and tell everyone that she had committed suicide (she even said that her husband was going to shoot her in the head).
John Paul’s story was different, because he claimed that their marriage was happy, stable, and full of support for each other, but some documents point to the opposite, including one in which Mica agreed not to ask for alimony or financial support from her husband if she divorced.
What Happened to Mica Miller?
Not only was Mica the pastor’s wife, but she worked as a creative director at the church and was John Paul’s personal assistant, so her life was completely connected to his, even when they were away from home, and deeply connected to the church. On the outside, everything seemed perfect, but on the inside, she was trapped in an abusive marriage.
On April 15, 2024, Mica decided to file for divorce again and moved from the house they shared to a small apartment. But 2 days after John Paul was notified, Mica Miller was found dead, with a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigations revealed that that day, she had bought a gun, then drove several kilometers to reach a lake and called 911 to say she planned to commit suicide, but she was not looking to be arrested, but instead called to ask for her call to be traced so his family could know where his body was.
The next day, John Paul announced Mica’s death during his sermon at church, and said that she had taken her own life as a result of the mental health problems she was experiencing; She even said the position of creative director of the church was vacant.
John Paul’s behavior attracted a lot of attention, and many people found it suspicious, as it did not reflect a man who was grieving the death of his wife. As a result of this, the family began to share information on social networks, talking about Mica, her relationship with John Paul, about the abuse she had experienced while they were married, and about the divorce petition that had been presented to her just 2 days before she was found dead.
The case quickly went viral and theories began to flood social networks (as with the Gaby Petito case and the current Lindsey Clancy case), and many pointed to John Paul as the possible person responsible for Mica’s death, which he denied and continues to deny (in addition to the fact that the authorities confirmed that, on the day of Mica’s death, he was at one of his sons’ soccer tournament).
John Paul even said that Mica had tried to take her own life before and that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and that her mental health problems (which Mica herself talked about on her social media) were what contributed to her life being taken. John Paul even went so far as to say that Mica’s family convinced her not to take her medications, due to her strict religious beliefs (he accused them of using their beliefs to prevent Mica from taking medications she needed), and that this could also have been a factor.
For their part, Mica’s family thought that these problems were caused by John Paul and the domestic violence she suffered when they lived together. The family’s lawyers also alleged that Mica was never diagnosed, and that John Paul forced her to take medications he had not been prescribed and that he hid pills in her food.
None of this could be confirmed, but authorities discovered that Mica was indeed being harassed before her death, and that John Paul was connected to that.
Mica’s family is currently working to get through Mica’s Law, which seeks to add coercive control and isolation of a person within what is considered domestic violence.
April 27, 2024: The Death of Mica Miller?
That morning, Mica traveled from Myrtle Beach to Lumber River State Park, located more than an hour away. During the trip, he bought a gun. Once in the park, he called the emergency service. His intention, he explained, was for the authorities to locate his body and notify his family.
Shortly afterward, she was found shot dead.
The investigation reconstructed his movements, analyzed the available evidence, and determined that Mica had died by suicide. North Carolina authorities said they found no evidence that John-Paul Miller was present or physically involved in his death.
Therefore, Miller has not been charged with killing Mica.
However, public attention increased when the complaints she had made before she died became known. Family and friends began a campaign calling for a deeper investigation into the behavior that, according to them, Mica had suffered during the last years of her life.
The Federal Investigation Changed the Case?
The investigation continued, and the FBI finally intervened. The most important turn came in December 2025, when a federal grand jury indicted John-Paul Miller of cyberbullying and making false statements to federal investigators. The indictment maintains that between November 2022 and Mica’s death in April 2024, Miller would have developed a continued pattern of harassment.
Among the behaviors that federal prosecutors attribute to him are the massive sending of unwanted communications, the use of devices to track Mica’s movements, surveillance, interference in her finances and daily activities, and damage caused to her vehicle. The accusation also includes a particularly serious episode: Miller reportedly posted an intimate photograph of Mica on the Internet without her consent.
Investigators also maintain that he lied when questioned about some of these actions. Among other things, he denied causing damage to Mica’s tires, while the federal investigation claims to have found evidence related to the acquisition of a device intended to deflate them. These accusations remain pending trial. Miller declared not guilty, and he maintains his innocence.
Where is John-Paul Miller Currently?
After Mica’s death, Solid Rock Church’s situation changed radically. The congregation’s facilities ended up being sold, although Miller did not completely abandon his religious activity and, according to the information collected by the docuseries itself, he has continued to preach to small groups in the Myrtle Beach area. In June 2025, she married Suzie Skinner, a woman who had also been part of the Solid Rock Church environment.
Miller currently remains released on bail while awaiting his federal trial. The process, which has suffered several postponements, is scheduled for the judicial period of October 2026. The charge of cyberbullying can carry up to five years in prison and false statements to federal investigators up to another two. To this day, these accusations continue to be accusations, and Miller legally retains the presumption of innocence.

More than trying to solve death as if it were a conventional criminal mystery, Death of the Pastor’s Wife dedicates a good part of its three episodes to reconstructing Mica’s life and explaining how she got to her last months. The series reviews his arrival at Solid Rock Church as a teenager, his deep religious faith, his relationship with JP Miller, the progressive deterioration of marriage, and the allegations of control and harassment that preceded his death.
Family and friends participate directly in the documentary, which also incorporates previously unpublished images and recordings. The objective is for a good part of history to be reconstructed through Mica’s own voice and the people who were close to her.
That is why the real question of the series consists not so much in determining who fired the shot —the official investigation concluded that it was Mica herself— but in reconstructing what happened during the previous years and to what extent the alleged harassment and control he reported conditioned his life.
And therein also lies the still open character of the story. Two years after Mica Miller’s death, criminal proceedings against John-Paul Miller remain pending, and it will be the federal justice system that will have to determine if he committed the crimes of which he is accused.
