Devil May Cry: Everything We Know About the New Netflix Series

Dante is about to return, but this time not as the protagonist of a video game. As already announced last September, Devil May Cry will soon become a Netflix animated series, created by Studio Mir. The extremely ambitious project arrives to bring the unmistakable style and story of Capcom’s famous action series to the small screen to satisfy long-time fans and to encourage those who don’t know the game to approach the adventures of Dante and associates. The first teaser allowed us to take a look at the design of the protagonist, but now thanks to the video published on the occasion of Geeked Week 2023, we finally have the opportunity to learn some more details and therefore briefly summarize everything we know about the Devil May Cry animated series.

After the announcement, Netflix took advantage of the Geeked Week showcase to show fans the first teaser trailer of the animated series Devil May Cry, based on the famous video game of the same name. The video game series began with Devil May Cry in 2001 and has continued to evolve with numerous releases since then. Each chapter of the saga offers a gripping plot, epic combat, and a memorable soundtrack. Devil May Cry‘s defining element has always been its impeccable gameplay, which rewards players for creativity in combat. Who knows how these elements will be inserted into the Netflix TV series?

Devil May Cry: Plot and First Details

Although there isn’t much information at the moment, the new Devil May Cry TV series already seems to be based on some rather interesting foundations. Covering the role of screenwriter, we have Adi Shankar, already responsible for a successful video game adaptation like Castlevania, while the series will be produced by Studio Mir, a Korean team that already has some experience in the field of animated series, given that occupied with many other series published on Netflix including Voltron: Legendary Defender, Lego Elves: Secrets of Elvendale, Dota: Dragon’s Blood and many others.

According to what has been revealed, the anime series based on the popular Capcom action will be divided into 8 episodes and will once again bring Dante to face the dark forces of the demonic kingdom, in an adventure that promises lots of action and adrenaline, with a soundtrack to heavy metal, in full Devil May Cry style. The protagonist of the new anime series brings to the scene, as can be seen from the first videos, a younger Dante, inspired by the version of the prequel Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, albeit slightly revised in design to offer a more modern version. In the new behind-the-scenes video, published on the occasion of Geeked Week, Adi Shankar takes us to discover this new project, including new details and unpublished images of the preparatory sketches. Unfortunately, the video does not offer us the opportunity to take a new look at the scenes taken from the TV series, but we are still offered some important information to understand the nature and ambitions of the project.

The screenwriter promises that the new series will fully respect the style and universe of the game, confirming the presence of the typical dark fantasy tones of the saga and of most of the game’s protagonists, including Virgil and Lady. It must be said, however, that this is not the first time that Devil May Cry has been adapted into anime. In 2007, the Japanese studio Madhouse proposed a series inspired by the game which, however, was not very successful: it was essentially set in Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 2 with independent stories and new characters. in a new Netflix TV series, therefore, could finally be able to bring Dante’s adventures to the small screen, in a more faithful way and with changes that do not overly distort either the plot or the tone of the franchise.

Devil May Cry: Release Date

According to what was revealed in the new behind-the-scenes video, the new animated series will arrive in 2024. The creators have not opened up about the release date or period. We can, however, venture some hypotheses. Judging from the teaser published in September, the works seem to be at a rather advanced stage and the writing “coming soon to Netflix” suggests the imminent release of the episodes that will make up the first season. So we can still imagine that the series will arrive no later than the first half of 2024. To know for sure, however, we will have to wait for more detailed communications from Netflix.
