Overall Critics Ratings: 3.5/5 (four stars)

OMG 2 (Oh My God!) is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language satirical comedy-drama film written and directed by Amit Rai. It is a spiritual sequel to OMG – Oh My God! (2012). The film stars Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi, Yami Gautam, and Aamir Naik. It follows the story of a man who files a lawsuit against the Indian government for not providing comprehensive sex education in schools. The film has been praised for its bold and progressive message and its strong performances. Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi give two of the best performances of their careers, and Yami Gautam is also excellent. The film’s message about the importance of sex education is timely and essential, and it is delivered in a funny and thought-provoking way. However, the film does have some flaws. The courtroom scenes can be a bit slow-paced, and the film’s message can be a bit heavy-handed at times. Overall, though, OMG 2 is a well-made and vital film that is sure to spark some debate.

OMG 2 Critics Review: By Taran Adarsh, Komal Nahta, Anupama Chopra, Rajeev Masand

Akshay Kumar’s film OMG 2 has been released. Before proceeding further in the review, I would like to correct this sentence. OMG 2 is not Akshay’s film, at least as a hero. This film is by writer and director Amit Rai. If the film is to be recognized by the actors, then this film is of artists like Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam. Akshay’s credit is not being dismissed. This is not just the film of Akshay Kumar, the superstar. And this is also its biggest victory. The censor board had asked to have 27 cuts, yet you will not miss anything in this movie. Before the release of the movie, those protesting after watching the movie will think about whether to protest or leave, although they will think even if they support it.

Bold. Brave. Progressive… It conveys what it intends to without mincing words… OMG2 has a captivating plot, gripping screenwriting and solid dialogues, but what enhances the impact are the towering performances. OMG2 faces a mighty opponent in Gadar2… Clearly, this is not a film that will commence its journey with great numbers at the Boxoffice, but has the power to grow with strong word of mouth.

On the whole, Oh My God 2 is a fair entertainer as it has a novel and bold subject and some very good portions. It will benefit due to the Independence Day holiday on Tuesday. But on the negative side are the following: the opposition of Gadar 2 (in North India) and Rajini The Jailer (in South), both released this week, will cost it dear because the latter films have come as roadrollers; the dialect used for the dialogues will come in the way of people’s comprehension; and the lack of a tight script and the missing emotional quotient will restrict its appeal. All the above will come in the way of the film scoring too well at the box-office. In other words, the film’s business will be less than the critical acclaim.

And I haven’t been taken by surprise as much as I was in OMG 2, in the best way possible. It took me some time to get used to the fact that this was a film which was taking its mission – talking up the vital importance of sex education amongst school-going children, and even more importantly, taking the shame away from such discussions —A mainstream Hindi film taking up cudgels on behalf of the proponents of catching ‘em young? Speaking straight and true? Mentioning the wonders of the Kamasutra? Opening up syllabuses to include sex education? Yes, yes, and yes. Omg.

Overall, ‘OMG 2’ is a film that has the right mix of everything. In short, it succeeds in being an entertainer with a valid message. Akshay Kumar’s fans will be in for a huge treat where the actor delivers one of his career-best performances.

If the makers of OMG 2 knew where to draw the line and what to highlight and what to weed out, they would have had a far mellower and infinitely more convincing film to show for their well-intentioned but ill-conceived efforts. While some of the thoughts that the film tosses around cannot be faulted, the methods that it employs to verbalise them border on the overly callow, when they are not outright facetious. To sum up, OMG 2 aspires to be as sharp as a scalpel but is actually as blunt as the back of a knife.

the story of OMG 2 actually revolves around Pankaj Tripathi. Pankaj’s Kanti Sharan Mudgal is a family man – he is a doting father and a loyal husband, and a Shiva devotee. The film sets in motion when Kanti’s son Vivek is rusticated from school after he was accused of immoral (sexual in nature) behaviour. Ashamed at what happened, Kanti decides to leave town with his family, but just at that opportune moment, there is divine intervention. He meets Akshay Kumar, who helps him realise that this happened due to a lack of awareness, prejudice, along with misinformation. Under this divine guidance, Kanti decides to take the concerned parties to court, while simultaneously educating those involved.

Every frame tries to remind you of the first one because it falters mostly every single time. All said and done, this film is brilliant in the ‘must-talk-about’ concept which tries to achieve things conveniently. I had all the plans to rate this a 3/5 but Akshay Kumar & team’s courage to serve a sensitive topic in an entertaining way deserves a .5 more for the vision.
