Marlon first appeared in “Kin,” meeting Joel and Ellie after they broke into his home. Like Melanie Lynskey’s Kathleen, Marlon’s character has no video game counterpart. He is a survivor who lives with his wife Florence (Elaine Miles) in their cabin, paying no attention to what happens beyond the walls, similar to how Bill and Frank have chosen to spend their lives. Though their first meeting didn’t start on the right foot, Marlon and Joel settled their differences after Joel made it clear that his only intention is to find his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna).  Florence even made soup for the unexpected guests and appreciated Ellie’s witty replies.

The episode directed by Jasmila Žbanić was the perfect moment for Marlon to debut. Known for her poignant portrayals of the human cost of war, the critically acclaimed Bosnian director created a well-rounded character with Marlon, despite his brief screen presence. In a few lines, Marlon made it clear that he doesn’t believe in the cause of the Lights – the rebel group fighting against the military dictatorship – and that he doesn’t like the people who live in the Jackson community, like Joel’s brother. When Joel accused Marlon of hiding, the older man replied that he had lived in his cabin long before the Cordyceps outbreak, much to his wife’s disapproval. Before parting ways, the two warn Joel and Ellie of the dangers they could face if they continued to travel west.
