The Flash: Who is Kara the “Supergirl”? How Kara fits into The Flash Story?

The Flash's Super Bowl Trailer Offers a New Look at Sasha Calle's Kara, the New Kryptonian Hero Taking Superman's Place in a Different Universe

The Flash’s Super Bowl trailer offers a closer look at Sasha Calle’s character Kara. The Multiversal story of The Flash sees the return of various DC characters, including Michael Keaton’s Batman, Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne, and Michael Shannon’s General Zod, but in addition to these familiar faces, it also introduces a new Kryptonian hero who will wear Superman’s iconic costume in his absence: Kara Zor-El. Barry Allen’s arrival in a different DC universe puts him at the center of General Zod’s invasion. But as the Super Bowl trailer for The Flash movie suggests, Henry Cavill’s Superman won’t be there to save Earth in this universe. Instead, a Kryptonian woman could be humanity’s salvation. While many characters have taken Superman’s place over the decades, Sasha Calle’s Kara is quite different from the others. With a similar costume and similar power set to Superman, she looks like a female version of the Man of Steel or a new take on her iconic cousin, Supergirl aka Kara Danvers. Both of these descriptions have some truth, as this new superhero is a bit of both.

Kara is The Flash’s Supergirl (From Her Alternate Universe)

Instead of the classic version of Supergirl, who coexists with her cousin Superman as the Last Child of Krypton in most DC universes, Sasha Calle plays an alternate universe version of the character on The Flash. In the Super Bowl trailer, Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen says “it’s not Clark” when he sees her, which suggests that Superman is either dead or doesn’t exist in The Flash’s new universe. Instead, Kara is the Kryptonian who comes to Earth to fight General Zod. Her iteration of Supergirl looks very different from any portrayal of Kara Zor-El. Instead of the Kryptonian blonde who usually wears a skirt with her super suit, Calle’s short-haired Supergirl looks extremely Lara Lane-Kent-like. In the Injustice universe, Lara Lane-Kent is the daughter of Superman, and she is active as a superhero along with her father. In The Flash, however, she appears to be simply an alternate universe version of Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, who will replace Henry Cavill’s character.

How Kara Fits Into The Flash Story

Given that Andy Muschietti ‘s The Flash is adapting various story elements from DC’s Flashpoint, it’s likely Sasha Calle’s character is replacing Kal-El as the main subject of ” Project Superman.” In her universe, she may not have been well received when she arrived on Earth, and instead of living in peace like with Jon and Martha Kent, she may have lived as a lab rat for years until she had a chance to break out and demonstrate his heroism to the world. In the Supergirl universe, General Zod is invading Earth and Kara may not be known as a superhero just yet. Barry Allen’s arrival may be the key to her escape from her prison, allowing her to face Zod and save Earth from being terraformed. This would make her one of the main superheroes in her universe, possibly alongside Michael Keaton’s Batman and Barry Allen’s multiversal counterpart. After the events of The Flash, however, Sasha Calle’s future is uncertain, as the DCU’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow may take place in a different universe. It is not yet known whether the actress will reprise her role in that film.
