What is MODOK Doing In The Quantum Realm? Here Are 4 Theories About Ant-Man Quantumania

In the new Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania trailer there are many scenes set in the Quantum Realm and at 1:45 MODOK appears, a very particular character from the Marvel universe. Due to an experiment performed on himself to increase his intelligence, the villain MODOK appears as a huge head surrounded by a cybernetic container, from which small arms and legs sprout.

What is MODOK Doing In The Quantum Realm?

In the film directed by Peyton Reed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, to be released in Italian cinemas on February 15, 2023, there will be the debut of the MODOK character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Why is MODOK in the Quantum Realm? How did it get there? In this article, we try to answer these questions by making hypotheses. If you too have wondered what MODOK’s past might be, read our ideas on his possible history and what reasons could have brought him to the Quantum Realm.

MODOK Was Born in the Quantum Realm?

In the world of Marvel comics MODOK is a scientist named George Tarleton who works for AIM, or Advanced Idea Mechanics, a criminal organization engaged in the development of technologies for the most dangerous villains in the world of comics. In the MCU MODOK’s origin may be completely different, and he may even have been born and raised in the Quantum Realm. His appearance, first seen within the MCU in the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania trailer, is bizarre enough to look alien.

If MODOK were one of the inhabitants of the Quantum Realm, he could be a dangerous ally of Kang. The latter may have promised something to the inhabitants of the Quantum Realm to convince them to ally with him, in a way similar to the pact that Kang himself makes with Ant-Man in the trailer. It can be speculated that Kang promised MODOK to be his right-hand man in the invasion of other universes, and this may have prompted George Tarleton to form a lethal alliance and prepare for a war between dimensions. Kang and MODOK’s alliance could prove to be one of the most dangerous in MCU history, as both are ruthless and ruthless.

MODOK is An Evil Scientist?

Another hypothesis could be that MODOK’s origin in the MCU is very similar to that of Marvel Comics. In this case, MODOK would be part of the AIM of the MCU, seen in the film Iron Man 3 under the leadership of the Mandarin aka Aldrich Killian. According to this hypothesis, MODOK may have been experimented with, perhaps looking for a way to find a weapon. He may have tried to use quantum energy in some way, exploiting its destructive potential.

According to my hypothesis, in his attempt to create an unprecedented weapon, the villain may have mistakenly created a quantum tunnel into which he was sucked. If this hypothesis is correct, MODOK could be stuck in the Quantum Realm and want to return to planet Earth to his old life. For this purpose, he may have made a pact with the Kang and become a deadly ally.

MODOK Joined Kang Voluntarily

My third guess is that MODOK is scientist George Tarleton, who changed his appearance by experimenting on himself just like in the Marvel comics. In the course of his work for AIM MODOK may have learned of Kang‘s existence and possibly even located him in the Quantum Realm. In this case, MODOK could have deliberately chosen to reach Kang in the Quantum Realm to ally himself with him, perhaps because the scientist became aware of Kang’s power over time and the various realities of the Multiverse.

If this were the case, AIM could have a tunnel ready to reach the Quantum Realm at any moment, and this tunnel could be used as a gateway between dimensions on either side. Such technology could be very dangerous in the hands of AIM’s corrupt scientists, but at the same time also represent an opportunity for escape for Ant-Man, Wasp, Cassie, Janet Van Dyne and Hank Pym.

MODOK is Darren Cross aka Hornet

If you saw the first film of the Ant-Man saga of 2015, you will surely remember the character of Bumblebee aka Darren Cross. This is the villain who tries to sell Pym technology, capable of shrinking people, to the terrorist organization Hydra. In the Ant-Man ending, Hornet seems dead due to the action of Scott Lang, who managed to enter his suit and sabotage it. But could Hornet not be deceased? Seeing the scene, Hornet seems to shrink until he disappears, but there is no real evidence of his death.

In the trailer of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania at minute 0:56 MODOK’s face is seen for a brief moment inside his cybernetic armor. The face bears a certain resemblance to that of Corey Stall, the actor who played Hornet in the 2015 film Ant-Man. Below is a screenshot of the trailer scene:

Due to this similarity, the theory that MODOK’s true identity is that of his enemy Darren Cross or Bumblebee has begun to circulate among Marvel fans on the net. If Hornet isn’t dead, he may have shrunk enough to end up in the Quantum Realm, perhaps because Ant-Man sabotaged his suit causing an unpredictable effect. Perhaps Hornet’s body has not shrunk proportionally, with the result that his arms and legs are too small compared to his head which has become enormous.

If this hypothesis is confirmed, Hornet may want to take revenge on Scott Lang more than anything. In this case, he may have a plan ready to intervene in the pact that Ant-Man has made with Kang and hurt Scott, probably even trying to kill him. It’s too soon to tell if any of these hypotheses could be close to Marvel’s plans for the character of Modok.
