New year (also) means new serials coming soon. For the moment, the supply does not seem to slow down, and she looks bulimic even in the year that has just begun. So, we thought of this useful viewing guide, divided by platforms and TV channels, to understand together which are the most anticipated TV series of 2023 on Netflix and other streaming platforms. In the long list, there will be no new seasons of House of the Dragon, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Stranger Things, Andor, Euphoria, My Brilliant Friend and the others that we will not see before 2024, or those that have arrived surprised at the end of 2022 after a long wait, like Peacemaker. Or some titles from the very first days of 2023, such as Kaleidoscope and The Lying Life of Adults on Netflix.
Among the many arrivals that we mention with two words so as not to forget them are: the true crime anthology Truth Be Told 3 with Octavia Spencer who this time will be joined by Gabrielle Union (January 20 on Apple TV+); the comedy Hello Tomorrow! by and with Billy Crudup and the thriller Liaison with Vincent Cassell and Eva Green (respectively and February 17 and 24 always on Apple Tv+); the last season of the drama A Million Little Things, The Company You Keep from February 19 also on ABC which brings back Milo Ventimiglia, an adaptation of the Korean series My Fellow Citizens; Welcome to Chippendales from January 11 on Disney+’s Star in which Kumail Nanjiani leads a group of strippers embroiled in a murder; Extraordinary original British comedy from the makers of Killing Eve (also on Disney+ from January 25).
Most Anticipated Tv Series of 2023
Also expected on Paramount+ is the revival of Frasier with the return of Kelsey Grammer and the George & Tammy miniseries about country music stars played by Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon (January 19). Also highly anticipated are the second seasons of last season’s revelation series Yellowjackets (from February 26 in the US on Showtime) and of the miniseries with Bryan Cranston Your Honor (from January 15). The last part of Firefly Lane with Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl is eagerly awaited on Netflix, which for now does not have a date.
The revival (effectively the 16th season) of Criminal Minds: Evolution arrives on Disney+ Star on January 18th. Closes The Flash with the ninth season on February 8 on The CW. Great expectations also for Luther’s film with the return of Idris Elba who announced on his social account that it should arrive in March on the BBC. Presented in Venice, perhaps the last work by Lars Von Trier due to illness, which ends his series that began in the 90s, The Kingdom: Exodus is expected in Italy on MUBI but still does not have an official date.
Already since last year, Our Flag Means Death the pirate series by Taika Waititi for HBO Max that makes fun of the stylistic features of the genre as already done with What We Do in The Shadows with the vampire one. We also look forward to HBO’s Hacks with Jean Smart continuing to rake in the awards. The revival of the comedy Party Down arriving on February 24 on STARZ (we are currently homeless with the imminent closure of Lionsgate+). On Peacock Poker Face the mystery series of Rian Johnson with Natasha Lyonne, already seen in a cameo in Glass Onion – Knives Out 2, which arrives on January 26 in the USA. Finally, we quote True Lies expected on February 23 on CBS, inspired by the film of the same name by James Cameron with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis: in this case the protagonists are Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga in the role of Harry, an international spy, and his wife Helen, a She is a bored teacher who is shocked when she discovers her husband’s double life and will be recruited by the agency to form a sort of Mr. And Mrs. Smith while also having to take care of their three teenage children.
There’s also Jack Thorne’s British Miniseries Best Interests with Michael Sheen and Sharon Horgan, whom we enjoyed as creator and performer in Catastrophe and Bad Sisters. These are just some of the titles and we will surely have forgotten some, but we have tried to be as exhaustive and complete as possible. The Most Anticipated Series Of 2023 On Netflix
1. The Three-Body Problem
Announced at TUDUM and based on the Chinese sci-fi novel trilogy The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin, this majestic project seems to be Netflix’s answer to HBO’s House of the Dragon and Prime Video’s The Rings of Power. Former Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss have the daunting task of adapting this layered and complex saga, in which they will reunite with John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), among others. From the first images shown, the large investment of the platform in the project is clear. Let’s hope for a good return, it is certainly the most awaited novelty on the 2023 platform.
2. Copenhagen Cowboys
The highly anticipated second series by Nicolas Winding Refn, the first for Netflix, will debut on the platform on January 5, following its presentation at the Venice Film Festival. The filmmaker returns home to Denmark, thanks to the pandemic, to create Copenhagen Cowboy which, from the images seen, seems to have all the characteristics of his cinema: raw, violent, sometimes repelling yet fascinating, beautiful to see and study shot after shot, while one is fascinated by the use of color (in this case perhaps red).
3. Shadow and Bones Season 2
The highly anticipated second season of the fantasy series based on the novels by Leigh Bardugo is arriving on March 16th. In Shadow and Bones, dark forces conspire against orphan cartographer Alina Starkov, who has an extraordinary power that could change the fate of her war-torn world. Starring Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Ben Barnes.
4. That ’90s Show
The sequel to That ’70s Show arrives on January 19 on the streaming service. In That 90’s Show, the classic sitcom characteristics of the original series are revived to bring back the 90s. Kitty and Red Forman (re-founded Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith) welcome a new generation of teenagers into their basement when granddaughter Leia decides to spend the summer in Wisconsin. Participation is expected from the cast of the original series, which has always remained very close to it.
5. Heartstopper Season 2
Highly anticipated sequel (the third season has already been ordered) to the perfect teen serial for all ages based on the homonymous graphic novel series by Alice Oser. Heartstopper recounts the discovery of their sexual identity by a group of boys at school. An adorable and unmissable British comedy also on a visual level for the delicacy of the story and the LGBTQIA+ theme, for is among the best Netflix series of 2022. We can’t wait to find out what will happen to Charlie, Nick, and their friends but we don’t have a precise date yet.
6. You Season 4
On February 9, just in time for Valentine’s Day, the first part of the fourth season will arrive (the second one a month later, on March 9) of You, the soap drama thriller starring Penn Badgley based on the novels by Caroline Kepnes. It’s already a cult on Netflix, which acquired it from the second season, making it a guilty pleasure with a literary flavor. Stalker and serial killer Joe Goldberg will move to Paris in the city of romance par excellence for new potential victims. Will he be able to find the love of his life?
7. The Witcher Season 3
Expected for summer 2023, it will have been two years since The Witcher last aired. Highly anticipated also because it will be Henry Cavill’s last season as Geralt of Rivia before replacing Liam Hemsworth in the already-ordered fourth season. An intense farewell has been promised by the interpreter, and fans are curious to see the path taken by the authors. The series had two prequels, also produced for Netflix: the animated film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and the miniseries The Witcher: Blood Origin with Michelle Yeoh arriving at the end of 2022.
8. Manifest Season 4 Part 2
The Grand finale for the NBC series saved by Netflix gives a nod to Lost. The passengers of Flight 828 Jamaica – New York City mysteriously disappeared for five years without aging during turbulence, but only five minutes passed for them. After the revelations of the first part of the fourth season, the last episodes of Manifest will have the task of finally explaining the truth about the mysterious disappearance, starting from the Stone family and Angelina’s fate. 9. Never Have I Ever… Season 4
The fourth and final season is also Mindy Kaling’s semi-autobiographical teen comedy starring Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), beloved by audiences and critics. Never Have I Ever … tells the story of an Indian girl’s adolescence in the United States today. What will be the fate of Devi’s loves? We can’t wait to find out.
10. The Crown Season 6
The sixth and final season is expected in November as a tradition for one of the flagships of the platform (although the fifth season disappointed us a bit). The last turning point to tell the story of the Crown and the English royal family was during the reign of Elizabeth II ever closer to the present day. The Most Anticipated Series Of 2023 on Prime Video
1. Citadel
Citadel is Prime Video’s globally ambitious project from brothers Anthony and Joe Russo starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci which will have various series locally. The protagonist of the Italian one will be Matilda De Angelis, flanked by Lorenzo Cervasio, Maurizio Lombardi, Thekla Reuten, Julia Piaton, Filippo Nigro and Bernhard Schütz. Further Citadel productions in several languages are in the works, including the already confirmed Indian Original series developed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK (The Family Man).2. Sono LilloOn January 5th, after the presentation at the Rome Film Fest, Sono Lillo arrives on the platform, the first series of Lillo Petrolo which continues the fruitful collaboration with Prime Video and Lucky Red. A meta-television show in which Lillo has to juggle working, sentimental, family life… and her alter ego Posaman! In the cast many faces of contemporary Italian comedy, from Pietro Sermonti to Paolo Calabresi and Marco Marzocca, from Caterina and Corrado Guzzanti to Valerio Lundini, from Michela Giraud to Edoardo Ferrario and others, Lillo will try to find himself behind the mask he has built.
3. Hunters Season 2
Second and already last season on January 13 for Hunters the pulp series with Logan Lerman and Al Pacino who had surprised by the mixture of genres and the reference to b-movies. After an accident derails their businesses in Europe, the Hunters must band together to hunt down the most notorious Nazi in history, Adolf Hitler, who is hiding in South America. Meanwhile, a look back reveals that Meyer Offerman (Pacino) encounters a dangerous threat that could expose his secret and reveal his true identity. Also starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jerrika Hinton, Lena Olin, Josh Radnor, Tiffany Boone, Carol Kane, Louis Ozawa, Kate Mulvany, and Greg Austin.
5. Carnival Row Season 2
Second and already last season arriving on February 17 also for the fantasy series with Orlando Bloom and Cara Develigne. In a fantasy world where humans and creatures collide, former Inspector Rycroft Philostrate aka Philo is engaged in an investigation into a series of gruesome murders that fuel social tensions. Vignette Stonemoss and the Black Ravens plot revenge for the unjust oppression inflicted by the human leaders of The Burgue, Jonah Breakspear and Sophie Longerbane. Tourmaline inherits supernatural powers that compromise his fate and the future of Carnival Row. And, after escaping The Burgue and her vengeful brother Ezra, Imogen Spurnrose and her partner Agreus Astrayon will have to face a radically new society that disrupts their plans.
5. Everybody Loves Diamonds
Heist series with comedy implications, inspired by the “Coup of Antwerp” of 2003, defined by the international media as “the biggest diamond theft in the world”, Everybody Loves Diamonds will be the original Italian Prime Video series of 2023. At the center is a deranged group of thieves led by Leonardo Notarbartolo (Kim Rossi Stuart), who, with a brilliant plan, manages to bypass the cutting-edge security system of the Antwerp Diamond Center and steal precious stones worth millions of dollars. Also in the cast are Anna Foglietta, Gianmarco Tognazzi, Carlotta Antonelli, and Leonardo Lodi, with the participation of Rupert Everett and Malcolm McDowell.
6. The Wheel of Time Season 2
The Wheel of Time, already renewed for a third season, is one of the most popular and enduring fantasy series of all time, with more than 90 million books sold. Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only a few women can wield it, the story follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of an incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in Two Rivers. There she embarks on a perilous journey around the world with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, destined to save or destroy mankind. Also starring Daniel Henney, Zoë Robins, Madeleine Madden, and Josha Stradowski.
7. Good Omens Season 2
Expected for summer 2023, from the international best-seller by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, the second season of Good Omens will see Michael Sheen and David Tennant return as Aziraphale, a demanding angel, dealer in rare books, and Crowley, a demon from the busy life. Having been on Earth since the beginning, and having now thwarted the Apocalypse, Aziraphale and Crowley are returning to a comfortable life among mortals in Soho, London, when an unexpected messenger confronts them with a startling mystery.
8. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5
The award-winning series from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino returns for a fifth and final season, in which Rachel Brosnahan’s Midge Maisel prepares for the final bow after the important warning received in the finale of the fourth. In the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel 5, there will be everyone: Tony Shalhoub, Alex Borstein, Marin Hinkle, Michael Zegen, Kevin Pollak, Caroline Aaron, Luke Kirby, together with the return of Kelly Bishop and Milo Ventimiglia promised by Palladinos.
9. Gen V
A spin-off of The Boys, the show is set in America’s only high school exclusively for young-adult superheroes (operated by Vought International). Gen V explores the lives of hormonal and competitive superheroes who test their physical, sexual and moral limits as they compete to achieve the top level in school. In the cast Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Shelley Conn, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sean Patrick Thomas, Marco Pigossi, Clancy Brown, Alexander Calvert, Jason Ritter. Guest stars The Boys performers Jessie T. Usher (A-Train), Colby Minifie (Ashley), and PJ Byrne (Adam).
10. The Continental
While the spin-off film Ballerina with Ana De Armas is being prepared in the cinema, the TV will also have its John Wick prequel series set in the hotel of the franchise, The Continental. In the US it will air on Peacock and in the rest of the world it will be available on Prime Video. Three episodes for three nights, starring Colind Woodell as a young Winston (Ian McShane in films with Keanu Reeves), Ayomide Adegum as a young Charon (Lance Reddick). Also in the cast are Mel Gibson, Ben Robson, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Jessica Allain, Mishel Prada, Nhung Kate and Peter Greene.
The Most Anticipated Series of 2023 on Disney+
1. The Mandalorian Season 3
On March 1st, the third season of the Disney+ phenomenon The Mandalorian, the first live-action Star Wars series, will finally arrive. After the exciting events of the season 2 finale, there is great curiosity from fans about the new chapter in the life of the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and “Baby Yoda” Grogu, after revisiting them in The Book of Boba Fett during the training with Han Solo.
2. Secret Invasion
There will be three Marvel series in 2023 and the first will be, in March, Secret Invasion inspired by the run of the same name. Samuel L. Jackson returns as Nick Fury to manage a group of superheroes. Also reprising their roles from the previous films are Ben Mendelsohn (Talos, the Chief of the Skrulls), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Martin Freeman (Everett Ross), Don Cheadle (James Rhodes) alongside new entries Dermot Mulroney, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Christopher McDonald.
3. Ahsoka
A second spin-off of The Mandalorian, hopefully, more compelling than The Book of Boba Fett. Ahsoka has all the credentials to hit the mark like the mother series, thanks above all to the charismatic protagonist, who has already entered the hearts of fans, played by Rosario Dawson.
4. Loki Season 2
There is curiosity surrounding the second season of Loki, among the few series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to have snatched the renewal for a second season almost immediately. After that plot twist at the end of the first cycle and the opening of the Multiverse, what can we expect in the new installments? Only Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson know it, together with the villain Khang played by Jonathan Majors who in the meantime we will see again in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The third series of the MCU in 2023, after Secret Invasion and Loki, will be Ironheart, in which Dominique Thorne will reprise her role as Riri Williams after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
5. Fleishman is in Trouble
The only title that we mention for the Star section, coming from FX, is the miniseries Fleishman is in Trouble starring Jesse Eisenberg and Claire Danes. Created by Taffy Brodesser-Akner and based on her novel of the same name, the series deals with the aftermath in the lives of a couple and a doctor after a series of interlocking events. Also starring Lizzy Caplan, Adam Brody, Josh Stamberg, Michael Gaston, Christian Slater, and Josh Radnor.
The Most Anticipated Series of 2023 on HBO Max
1. The Last of Us
Surely the most awaited series of 2023 is The Last of Us, based on the cult video game of the same name, and arrives on January 15th. The story takes place twenty years after the destruction of modern civilization. Joel (Pedro Pascal), a survivor, is tasked with getting Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and harrowing journey as both must traverse the United States and depend on each other for survival. A video game that made headlines for being a cinematic experience rather than a video game, definitively crossing the boundaries between the two media.
3. True Detective 4: Night Country
We don’t have a precise date yet, but there is great anticipation for the fourth season of the HBO crime anthology True Detective. Starring this time Jodie Foster for the first season orphaned by its creator Nic Pizzolatto-in place of her Issa López and the acclaimed Barry Jenkins. Also starring Kali Reis, John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc and Joel D. Montgrand. When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who run the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) must face their pasts and the dark truths that lie beneath the Arctic ice.
3. Perry Mason Season 2
It will return after almost three years on March 6 on HBO Perry Mason, the remake of the cult with Raymond Burr that sees Matthew Rhys in the role of the buffer protagonist. A sharp and intelligent rewrite of the story of Mason, Della Street and Paul Drake in 1930s Los Angeles. During the Great Depression, the city becomes the protagonist thanks to the X Olympic Games, the Hollywood boom, and oil. Perry Mason must get to the truth about the mysterious kidnapping of a child. Born as a miniseries and surprisingly renewed for 2 seasons.
The Most Anticipated Series of 2023 on Apple TV+
1. Servant Season 4
January 13 will be the beginning of the end for Servant, the serial creature of M. Night Shyamalan. In the swan song after the suspenseful season 3 finale, Leanne’s war with the Church of the Lesser Saints escalates, threatening not only Spruce Street, but the entire city of Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the Turner family is torn apart and dealing not only with the danger of Leanne but also with the knowledge that Dorothy is finally remembering what happened with Jericho. As the foundations of the family continue to crumble, the questions will finally be answered: who is Leanne Grayson and who is the child who lives in their house? The returning cast is Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell, Nell Tiger Free and Rupert Grint.
2. Shrinking
A highly anticipated comedy of the streaming service that focuses on quality arrives on January 27th. Starring an unusual and exciting pairing: Jason Segel and Harrison Ford. From Scrubs and Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence, Shrinking follows a grieving therapist (Segel) who begins to break the rules by telling his clients exactly what he thinks, thus ignoring his training and ethics and finding himself causing tumultuous changes in people’s lives…including his own. Also starring Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie and Lukita Maxwell.3. Ted Lasso Season 3Third and final season, currently undated, of the comedic jewel of Apple TV+. One of those comforts shows that make you feel immediately better after you’ve seen them and that will tell us what will happen to Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) after breaking up with Nate (Nick Mohammed). Without forgetting the epilogue of all the characters, we loved: Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) Higgins (Jeremy Swift), Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) and others.
3. Severance Season 2
After that ending, perhaps the best serial-level episode of 2022, we can only wait spasmodically for the second season of Severance. What if our work identities were split off from our identities outside the office? The little drama of the platform asked for it, setting up a story full of twists and turns and chiaroscuro, directed by Ben Stiller and starring Adam Scott flanked by Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, Patricia Arquette.
5. The Morning Show Season 3
The new season of The Morning Show should also see the light in 2023 on the platform. The series on #MeToo with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon after a dazzling inaugural cycle and a second season affected by Covid also on a narrative level is preparing to enter its third year for the first time without Steve Carell but with the ever-Mephistophelean Billy Crudup and the appreciated new entry Julianna Marguiles.
The Most Anticipated Series of 2023 on Paramount+
1. 1923
Highly anticipated second prequel spin-off of the acclaimed Yellowstone with Kevin Costner (which we remember will continue with season 5 on Sky for a matter of rights), 1923 stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford and will also have a second season already ordered. Also starring Jennifer Ehle, Jerome Flynn, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, James Badge Dale, Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves and Julia Schlaepfer. Crafted by Academy Award nominee Taylor Sheridan, the prequel introduces a new generation of the Dutton family and will explore the early 20th century as pandemics, historic droughts, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression plague the Mountain West and the Duttons whom they call home. Sheridan’s 1883 is also available on Paramount+, Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King.
2. Teen Wolf: The Movie
Two highly anticipated titles from the Teen Wolf universe, MTV’s beloved teen fantasy, on January 26 in the US and throughout 2023 here. In Teen Wolf: The Movie the wolves will howl again, calling for the return of banshees, werewolves, hellhounds, kitsunes and every other shapeshifter of the night. But only a werewolf like Scott McCall (Posey), no longer a teenager but still an alpha, can gather new allies and reunite trusted friends to fight what may be the most powerful and deadly enemy they have ever faced. 3. A Gentleman in Moscow
Adapted from Amor Towles’ internationally bestselling novel, A Gentleman in Moscow stars Ewan McGregor as Count Alexander Rostov who, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, discovers that his gilded past puts him on the wrong side of history. 4. That Dirty Black Bag
Available from January 25, the international and Italian co-production That Dirty Black Bag is a modern western starring Douglas Booth, Dominic Cooper, Niv Sultan and Guido Caprino. Arthur McCoy is an incorruptible sheriff trying to overcome his troubled past to bring law and order to the city. Red Bill is a notorious lone bounty hunter known for decapitating his victims and stuffing their heads into a black bag. When these two men’s paths collide, they both discover that in the Wild West, there are no heroes, no one is invincible, and predators may become the hunted.
