1899: Netflix Canceled the Series, Season 2 Will Not Be Made
1899, the new series conceived by the creators of Dark, was canceled by Netflix after only one season, despite the fact that a story consisting of three chapters was planned. After the recent cancellation of the TV series Fate: The Winx saga and Warrior Nun by Netflix, the streaming platform has canceled another series well known to the public, namely 1899. The TV series was created by the authors of Dark Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. Just Odar and Friese communicated the news to the public via Odar’s Instagram account. Their post on Monday, January 2, 2023, reads:
With a heavy heart, we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to end this incredible journey with Seasons 2 and 3 just like we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t go the way we planned. That’s life. We know millions of fans will be disappointed. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking part in this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget that.
1899: Netflix Canceled the Series
1899 is a rather complex series with many characters and mysteries that unfold during the episodes of the first season. Odar and Friese had already confirmed in November 2022 their willingness to continue with the second season of 1899. The finale of the first season of the TV series 1899 has a twist that completely changes the perspective on the events involving the ships Kerberos and Prometheus, as well as the main characters of the show including Maura, Captain Eyk, Henry and the mysterious child Elliot. It seems that fans will not be able to see the developments of the sensational finale.
Is there any way the 1899 TV series could be saved? Odar and Freise don’t mention it in their post, but it wouldn’t be the first time that the news of a canceled series has triggered a fan reaction that makes the company that set production in motion backtrack. At the moment it is not yet known if this could happen in the case of 1899, perhaps with a purchase of the rights by a different streaming platform.

1899 was a series that recounted the mysterious happenings on the deck of a migrant steamer heading west to leave the old continent. The passengers, a diverse group of European ancestry, are united by hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift in the open sea. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a terrifying nightmare. The series starred Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann and Miguel Bernardeau. The production of 1899 took place on a newly built virtual stage set up at Babelsberg studios in Germany, the largest facility of its type in Europe. Friese and bo Odar served as co-producers and executive producers. Friese served as screenwriter and bo Odar directed.
