Director Rohit Shetty, known as Blockbuster Shetty in the industry, this time he came back with his hit Jodi with Ranveer Singh after the blockbuster Simba and is now in Cirkus. Rohit Shetty is known for Bol Bachchan, the superhit remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film Golmaal franchise, and the Singham franchise. This time he has brought a remake of Gulzar’s memorable comedy film Angoor, Circus, but after watching the film, you feel that Rohit Shetty has not been able to come out of his Golmaal series. He has added some bricks and some obstacles to his film. There was never any logic in Rohit Shetty’s films anyway, but this time his magic has also disappeared. This family film of his has come out as the weakest film of his career.

Among the nine rasas of Natya Shastra, humor is considered to be the most difficult rasa. Based on its components, even if its permanent sense is lost, according to the dependence, stimulation, experience, and communication, the factors for generating humor are also different. If you want to understand it easily, then by making sarcasm, sarcasm, vulgarity and sardonic humor the basis of the story, from Hrishikesh Mukherjee to Dada Kondke and David Dhawan, all the directors have made different presentations of humor in cinema. Rohit Shetty’s new film Cirkus keeps on jumping from scene to scene with all kinds of humour. the figures of the characters with the events in the comic, the dialogue, and attempts also create a sense of humour, and Rohit Shetty’s writing team is confused here because they don’t have a clear direction from the very beginning to try to make a modern version of Rohit Shetty’s film ‘Angoor’. The film Cirkus is like a cocktail of all comedy films of Hindi and South Indian cinema, in which no clear color emerges due to a lack of balanced components.

On the whole, CIRKUS suffers from poor writing and forced humour, and appeals only in bits and pieces, more so in the second half. One definitely expected more from a Rohit Shetty film. At the box office, the film may reap the benefit of the Christmas and New Year holidays. However, it’ll appeal only to those who don’t mind a vacuous comedy. The film will have to depend heavily on spot bookings and positive word of mouth to make a decent impact.

Only Sanjay Mishra and Siddhartha Jadhav hold the film together. Mishra falls flat in the first half in dialogue delivery with no good one-liners, but he gets his moments in the second. Jadhav rightly plays a Johnny Lever protege and will surely be Bollywood’s next Johnny Lever if he gets more acting assignments. The only saving grace of the movie is Deepika Padukone and her song, Current Laga Re.

All said and done, Rohit Shetty & Ranveer Singh’s Cirkus simultaneously overstuffed & yet malnourished. A lot is going on but nothing makes you stay back & laugh your heart out. You had a dozen of the best comedians available in the country today! You could’ve put them in a room for 2 hours & their conversations would’ve been funnier than this film.

To the already busy plot in Cirkus, director Rohit Shetty & the writers add half a dozen characters, a superhuman ability for one twin to endure electric currents, which somehow transfers to the other twin even though he lives in another town, love interests who crowd the frame without adding much value and a larger philosophical debate about nature versus nurture. Apart from being an oversized entertainer, Cirkus also wants to advocate for tolerance and inclusivity. It’s a noble thought but the film is a mess. I was hoping for a rollicking good time but circus did not deliver to paraphrase DS Eliot and this is the way the year ends not with a bang but a whimper

This movie is Rohit Shetty’s sincere attempt to deliver a full-blown entertainer to all Bollywood lovers who enjoy such large-scale experiences. The film feels like a snooze fest at the start. However, slowly as the mystery unfolds, Cirkus takes a hilarious turn post-intermission. The film concludes on an emotional note, with a dash of comedy thrown in for good measure. It also shows a connection to the Golmaal world. If you love Rohit Shetty films and are an ardent Ranveer Singh fan, then this movie will be a good one-time watch for you but if you do not keep your hopes very high.

To note, the screenplay and dialogues prove to be the game changer for Cirkus as without a proper screenplay the movie would have been a disaster. On the other hand, the music of the film gets an average reaction. However, Deepika Padukone’s special number with Ranveer Singh (Current Laga Re) happens turns out to be one of the highlights of the film. Their chemistry in the song was electrifying. While the background score is decent as well, the sound effects were quite impressive for a comedy film. Overall, Cirkus gets 3.5 stars and the extra mark here goes for the fantastic supporting cast who did their well and brought the film to us in a different manner where we can laugh in these hard times.

The issue with Cirkus is that it feels outdated. Not because it’s set in the 60’s, but the formula is cliched, the VFX in some scenes looks amateurish and the music, unlike Shetty’s previous films, is a big downer. There is no harm in making a mindless comedy, but for it to work you need to have some solid writing to back your effort. In Cirkus, the writing is average and the only time the film picks tempo is when the supporting cast delivers. Jacqueline Fernandes and Pooja Hegde have very little to do. Ranveer in this double role gives his best, but is let down by a weak script that doesn’t do justice to his efforts.
