After two years of waiting, Alice in Borderland is back on Netflix with new games in which the protagonists are not going to have a good time. The adventure of Arisu and company in this alternate world where the French deck governs the fate of those who dwell in it preceded the success of Squid Game, although with a less “realistic” touch than the Korean series. In the second season of Alice in Borderland the Japanese Netflix series Based on the homonymous manga by Haro Aso, the protagonists continue trapped in that strange world of perverse games. But the tests have become more and more deadly and Tokyo has grown wilder and crueler.

Unsurprisingly, Alice in Borderland Season 2 picks up where the first one left off, making it clear that there are still plenty of deadly games to face if the protagonists are to have any chance of getting out alive. It is there where its vibrant rhythm, its hooking tests and its uninspired dialogues reappear. To put it another way, ‘Alice in Borderland’ is a great series conceptually, since this adaptation of Haro Aso’s manga is a stimulating variant of titles like ‘Battle Royale’ that presents its universe in which there is room for action, emotion and reflection. A winning combo to which a good production job must be added so that everything looks good and even leaves specific images of indisputable beauty -for example, a moment when two characters are looking at the sea in a wide shot comes to mind general.
So, what is it that makes Alice in Borderland better but not the great series it could be? Mainly its most dramatic facet, since the dialogues often make two mistakes that are very difficult to ignore. On the one hand, they are overloaded, overemphasizing the message that is to be conveyed to the viewer, and on the other, they lack the naturalness necessary for one to believe that the character in question is saying those words. This mainly affects the character of Arisu (Kento Yamazaki), the great protagonist of the show, being especially evident when he finds himself in very compromising situations, but here at least there are situations in which he almost seems to be playing with that impression he causes.
I think, for example, of the way he ended up winning in one of the games when everything seemed against him. Luckily, that is less in other cases and even allows us to enjoy an exemplary game in which both human relationships and the growing mistrust that arises in extreme situations are successfully explored. I was so satisfied during the third and fourth episodes that I even came to think that with that alone I would have been compensated by watching the whole series.
Arisu and Usagi will not have a moment of calm, the action will find them in the early stages of the season and it will not take long for them to realize that the only way to discover what is that world they have been dragged into and, hopefully, escape, it is by playing the different games that they will get the face cards. The plot of Alice in Borderland is partly guessed from the title. The serial reinterpreted the tale of Alice in Wonderland by telling the story of Arisu (Kento Yamazaki), an unemployed former university student and video game enthusiast, who suddenly finds himself in a desolate Tokyo victim of a blackout. Together with his best friends Chōta (Yūki Morinaga) and Karube (Keita Machida): the trio soon find themselves catapulted into a series of dangerous and sick games that they must win to survive. Over the course of season one, they didn’t make it, he did.
Together with him Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya), a lonely and sad girl whose father has just died, with whom she has decided to team up. We had left the protagonists at the end of the inaugural cycle with the Beach, a place where a large group of survivors led by the Hatter had gathered, who thought they could beat the Master Games at their own game. A fire had allowed Arisu and Usagi to get to the den of the Dealers, those who promoted the game by working for the Game Masters to survive. However, here they had discovered that in reality there was another level and another Master, a certain Mira (Riisa Naka), a young and mysterious figure, who had to be beaten to continue.

She was also anticipating where the second season of Alice in Borderland would go. Having obtained all 40 number cards, Arisu, Usagi, and the other characters discovered that they still had to get the twelve face cards from the deck. This implied that there were 12 more games where the blood was going to run without ceasing.
After Arisu, Usagi, Kuina and Chishiya wait for more than an hour at the Shibuya crossing for the next stage, new players appear who are attacked with long-range weapons. Seeing that it is the next test, the survivors start to run and soon realize that they must escape the king of swords. In the process, Chishiya gets separated from the group, the rest arriving at another game station. Arisu and his team must face the team of the King of Clubs, which is revealed in all its splendor. To win they must score more points than their opponents, which is not an easy task due to the rules. As he tries to get over Kyūma, the protagonist of “Alice in Borderland” discovers that his adversaries are citizens, so he tries to find out more about the world where they are trapped. With less than twenty minutes remaining in the game, Tatta sacrifices himself for the team and gives his bracelet to Arisu so that he can beat Kyūma. Meanwhile, Chishiya must pass a trust test. The game that at first seemed like it would last a long time ended sooner than they expected due to the lies of the participants. In the end, Chishiya and two other players survive after unmasking the jack of the hearts. After defeating the king of clubs, the group of the protagonist of “Alice in Borderland” decides to separate. Arisu tries to follow Usagi’s side, but an attack from the King of Swords divides them. The former is rescued by Aguni and together they set out to find and kill the one who is after them.
When it’s time to face the queen, Arisu and Usagi meet again. Once again they are on the verge of losing, but in the last round they manage to convince the other players not to give up hope of returning home and they are victorious. Before dying, the queen reveals that she was also a player and that after all the tests are over they will find the answers they are looking for so much. For her part, Chishiya meets the King of Diamonds in the Supreme Court and after a very complicated test wins thanks to his opponent.
In the middle of an overgrown Shibuya crossing, Niragi challenges Arisu. The first knows that his death is inevitable, so he intends to torture the rest. When Niragi fires at Usagi, Chishiya gets in the way and is severely injured. Just then, the king of spades attacks and the group join forces again.

After an arduous battle, the protagonists manage to defeat the king of swords, but in the process, Kuina, Ann, Aguni, and newcomer Heiya are severely injured. So, only Arisu and Usagi prepare to face the Queen of Hearts, Mira, who explains that they must survive three rounds of croquet. What seems like a simple game becomes complicated when Mira invites them to tea to delay the game and when Usagi’s injuries make her succumb. Arisu tries to pick up the game but gets caught up in the truth that the Queen of Hearts reveals to him.
Mira talks about the future, virtual reality, aliens, androids, and other false stories to provoke him. Padlocked by her lies, the protagonist of “Alice in Borderland” tries to kill her, but Usagi stops him. However, Mira does not stop and makes him believe that he is admitted to a psychiatric center, that she is her doctor, that Usagi is a patient with whom he has created a bond and that all that world is only in the head of him. To make him react, Usagi cuts her wrist and gets Arisu to continue the game. Following that last victory, Mira dies and the games are finally over.
Do The Survivors Return To The Real World?
The survivors have two options: accept or reject their permanent residence in that world. Arisu, Usagi, Kuina, Chishiya, Aguni, Heiya, and Niragi decline the offer, while Banda and Yaba accept it. Will they become the next game directors? Subsequently, all those who refused residency woke up in a hospital with various injuries. They don’t remember anything about the games and they don’t know each other either. Later, they explain to them that their hearts stopped for a minute when a meteor hit the earth.
When Arisu and Usagi meet again, they feel like they know each other from somewhere, but they have no idea where, however, they decide to walk through the hospital gardens together. It seems that the terrifying games are over, however, at the end of the second season of “Alice in Borderland” the Joker card appears. Does it mean the game isn’t over yet? Are they still trapped in that world?
Is It The End Of Alice In Borderland? or Season 3 is Coming?
After Antonio Resines ends in Los Serrano (more or less), Alice in Borderland seems to come to an end with a conclusion that you may like or not, we leave that up to each one. However, before moving to the credits, the camera pans over to a table outside the hospital where the victims of the “event” have finished to focus on a stack of cards from the French deck that a couple was playing with. They get up but leave all the cards on the table.
The wind begins to carry the entire deck in what is a metaphor for how all the games have been beaten… because they were all, right? In the center of the table, the only card that the wind is unable to carry away is the Joker, with which the second season finally says goodbye. Now, what does that plane mean? It could well indicate that the master game, which will reveal the person behind these ghoulish challenges, is yet to come in the third season of Alice in Borderland. The character playing the Joker on the deck may have already been introduced or may be quite a surprise.
It may also be an open ending, something that would prevent the series from seeming incomplete after the second season. That would prevent Netflix from pulling out the scissors and leaving the series halfway. But there is a third option: what if this reality where the characters face that cataclysm over Japan IS the end game? That “amnesia” and the feeling of the characters that they know each other may be key in a master plan perpetrated by the “joker”.
