Universal Pictures has released the first Oppenheimer photos of Christopher Nolan. The photos are included in TotalFilm’s upcoming preview of the 2023 films. We get our first look at Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who led the Manhattan Project during WWII and is considered the father of the bomb atomic. Starring opposite Murphy and Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, the head of the Atomic Energy Commission who fell out with Oppenheimer in the postwar years. The photos also show Nolan himself working behind the camera alongside his longtime cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema.

Oppenheimer’s First Look Images

Based on American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Oppenheimer will tell the story of how the physicist developed the world’s first nuclear weapons and was later accused of being a subversive after arguing against their proliferation. Other cast members include Matt Damon, Florence Pugh and Rami Malek. Academy Award winner Ludwig Göransson will provide the soundtrack.

Oppenheimer will mark the first time since 2000’s Memento that a Nolan film won’t be released by Warner Bros. His previous film, 2020’s Tenet, was delayed three times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually hit theaters in August of the same year. While the film was a box office success, particularly overseas, it fell short of expectations for a pre-pandemic turnout. Nolan would later speak out against Warner’s decision to release all of its 2021 features simultaneously on HBO Max, criticizing the studio for not consulting with creators on the decision and expressing concern about how the move would affect the experience of Go at Cinema. Nolan’s previous collaborations with Murphy include the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and the 2017 World War II-set blockbuster Dunkirk. Oppenheimer will be released in theaters on July 21, 2023.

Oppenheimer is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, written by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film will focus on theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer as he works at Los Alamos Laboratory during the era of the Manhattan Project and Ultimate becomes the father of the atomic bomb.

Oppenheimer’s development was first announced in late 2021 when Christopher Nolan reunited with Cillian Murphy after previously directing him in the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Dunkirk. Unlike most of his previous works, Nolan auctioned Oppenheimer’s rights to a variety of studios following his break with Warner Bros. due to the choice to release the films simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during the ‘sanitary emergency. Universal won the rights to Oppenheimer in a heated bidding war with the production, which runs from January to March 2022.
