The Sandman Season 2: Official Confirmation Arrives! Netflix Renews For The Second Season

Just a few hours ago, conflicting rumours were circulating on the net about the renewal of The Sandman. First, a tweet appeared on the DC Comics account, then promptly deleted, announcing the arrival of a second season. Then an inaccurate report began circulating which allegedly confirmed the cancellation of the series. Now, after the chase of conflicting news about the partners, comes the official one: the acclaimed adaptation of the Neil Gaiman comic will return to Netflix for the second season. The 10 episodes of the first season (here is our review) premiered streaming last August and quickly climbed the ranks of the most viewed TV series on the platform. The numbers (reported by CBR.com) are truly impressive, with 69.5 million people watching the series in the first week of programming and as many as 127.5 million in the second. The adaptation also received good reviews from both audiences and critics (a score of 80% and 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively).

The Sandman Season 2 Is Finally Reality: Neil Gaiman’s Tweet

Given the great success, already shortly after the release of the first season, fans almost took for granted the renewal of The Sandman for a second chapter. But as the news was waiting and updates to that effect were in short supply, viewers relied on social media to put pressure on Netflix. Gaiman himself spoke on the matter last September, pointing out that the analysis of the data would take some time and that putting pressure would not push the streaming giant to make a decision faster. The wait has therefore been rewarded and now the news of the renewal is finally official. Since the 1990s there have been several attempts to adapt the comic series for the small and large screen. Suffice it to mention the 2010 Warner Bros. project that involved Neil Gaiman himself, David S. Goyer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The project was later wrecked precisely because of the defection of Gordon-Levitt.

Followed by attempts at adaptation for TV by the director of Logan James Mangold and the creator of The Boys Eric Kripke, both ended in a stalemate. In 2019 Netflix finally announces The Sandman, with Allan Heinberg involved as showrunner and Gaiman and Goyer as executive producers. The rest, as they say, is history. As for the renewal, Gaiman shared the news of him on Twitter commenting: “The rumors are true. Netflix is thrilled that so many of you have watched Sandman and what we all hoped would happen… it really happened”.
