The Viewing is an episode difficult to classify within Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. On the one hand, its atmosphere and characters are very good, making the ending shocking. But on the other hand, the execution of the story doesn’t quite work, making the first half of the episode overly expository. The chapter is, in essence, a long wait until we reach a final explosion that appears out of nowhere.
We follow a rather motley crew of characters who receive an intriguing invitation to someone mysterious mansion. The host turns out to be one of the richest people in the country, an older man with highly eccentric tastes reminiscent of Elon Musk or Bill Gates. After arriving at his house they meet with him and his assistant and ingest large amounts of alcohol and drugs.

It’s 1979, On a night broken only by synth wave music coming from a speeding car, four people meet in a public parking lot waiting to be picked up by a driver. They are four professionals, each an excellence in his field (some linked to spirituality, some to music, some to science and some to literature), invited by a mysterious man, rich and powerful, to his prestigious villa. Once there, the four protagonists are made to sit down and will be welcomed by this man who will flaunt his wealth and his conquests, from the audio system appropriately made specifically for the home to the most precious and pure cocaine to share. But the rare piece of the collection is locked in a room, an object never seen before and which cost a real fortune.

What Is The Creature That Comes Out Of The Strange Rock?
Most likely, like the rest of the alien creatures in the anthology, he is some kind of Lovecraftian being. Although we don’t know its purpose, we have seen that the creature seems immune to bullets. Additionally, he possesses destructive abilities in the form of lightning and telekinesis of some kind.
Most likely, the final scene in which we see him walking towards a city indicates that he intends to attack the rest of the people. If this is true, it could pose a threat on a national or even global scale. In most of HP Lovecraft’s stories, when someone awakens one of these ancient evils, it means that everything is going to go to waste, so it would probably end up threatening all of humanity.
