The Rings of Power: Who Is Celeborn, Galadriel’s Missing Husband? The Relationship With Sauron And The War Of The Ring

The Rings of Power had – mistakenly – made us believe that Galadriel had seen his youth change to adapt the character as best he could to the story told by the Amazon Prime Video series. Seeing her young and fighting the forces of evil in the Southern Lands, destined to become Mordor, had made us believe that she had never married Celeborn, assuming that from the rewriting of the showrunners the elf who was the father of Celebrian, the future wife of Elrond and mother of Arwen, wife of Aragorn. In short, beyond the value had for the history of the elves, eliminating such a character would have destroyed an important branch of the family tree started by Eru Ilùvatar. Let’s go, however, in order.

Galadriel's Revelation

The Rings of Power: Galadriel’s Revelation

For the whole season, it seemed that Rings of Power wanted to tell us that Galadriel was becoming attached, if not developing an even stronger feeling, to Halbrand, for now the figure closest to being Sauron among all those who have deluded us during the first few seven episodes (find our review of The Rings of Power Episode 7 here). According, however, to the story told by Tolkien, as we anticipated, the elf was married to Celeborn. The episode distributed on Amazon Prime Video last Friday clarified this aspect, finally, however, unleashing a sort of revolt on the part of the most extreme fans of the English writer’s work. In a moment of extreme sincerity between Galadriel and Theo, Morfydd Clark finds himself confirming that she has a husband and that she has been married but turning to the past it almost seems that Celeborn may be dead.

It must be considered that elves live for thousands of years, as the Lord of the Rings trilogy itself demonstrates, which allowed us to see an aged Elrond, but still alive, or Galadriel herself (you are at one click from recovering Galadriel’s story between books and video games). The actress has, however, confirmed that her character is only convinced that Celeborn, reported missing for several years, is dead. A feeling that does not necessarily have to be the reality of the facts: on the other hand, the perception that Galadriel has of events does not have to correspond to what is happening in Middle-earth and her husband could still be alive, as indeed he must be. to maintain that continuity mentioned above, which will lead to the birth of Arwen, the future wife of King Elessar.

Who is Celeborn?

We, therefore, open this huge door to the character of Celeborn. While we know of many elves’ origins, for a long time the character played by Marton Csokas in the Peter Jackson trilogy was simply Galadriel’s husband. Then, thanks to the appendices of Tolkien’s great work, we learned that at the end of the First Age he had moved to Lindon with his wife, deciding not to fight the war against Morgoth. It is in their new land that – as described in the Unfinished Tales – the two get married, precisely in the Eregion, where they remain until their kingdom is destroyed by Sauron.

Who Is Celeborn

After, in fact, Celeborn decides to move to Rivendell, when Galadriel agrees to return to Valinor, where he is then joined by his wife several years later. It is in the Third Age that they move to Belfalas becoming the Lord and Lady of Lothlorien. Galadriel’s first journey to Valinor is shown at the beginning of The Rings of Power which should lead us to infer that Celeborn was deserving of being shown early in the Eregion, serving Gil-galad.

This omission of the character immediately confused everyone, but now the opportunity may have come for the showrunners to go and canonize a story that has always been very torturous for Tolkien’s writings. Beyond some characters who have revolved around the story of Celeborn, starting with Amroth, initially his brother and then his son, up to the complete elision to favor Celebrian in the role of the couple’s only daughter, the love story with her wife never found free rein.

The Relationship With Sauron And The War Of The Ring

Celeborn was present at the Eregion when Sauron presented himself as Annatar, lord of gifts, to join Celebrimbor in forging the Rings. Also, in those years he refused to access the Moira mines to follow his wife on the journey from Lindon and decided to stay in his land. These are the events that should intertwine with what is happening in the first season of Rings of Power, coming to show us, almost certainly in the second season, also the battle in which Celeborn took part together with Elrond to defend the Eregion, only to flee on Imladris, Sindarin name of Rivendell.

The confirmation of Celeborn’s condition also came from the words of JD Payne, one of the showrunners, who confirmed what we have already expressed to you a few moments ago: Galadriel says she has never seen her husband again, but she is not sure of her condition. Payne himself has confirmed that it will be difficult to think that the two will never meet again, so it is inevitable that we will soon have the opportunity to see the future Lady of Lothlorien rejoin her husband, to be able to give life to their offspring, the fusion of kingdoms and everything that saw them protagonists in the war on Sauron, up to the meeting also with the Fellowship of the Ring. All, in short, were postponed to the second season, along with many other revelations, including the identity of the Stranger, most likely.
