The creators of 1899, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, are also the two executive producers and showrunners of the project. They both wanted to create an international show both in the making phase and in the plot of the 1899 story. In that regard they told Deadline the following:
We felt that with the last few years that Europe was in decline, we wanted to counterpoint Brexit and rising nationalism in several countries, to get back to that idea of Europe of Europeans working and creating together. We wanted to explore this heart of Europe, where everyone comes from somewhere else and speaks a different language. Language defines your culture and behavior so much. Netflix and other streaming services opened the door to content in so many different languages, breaking the barrier that people struggled to read subtitles with. There is so much to discover out there besides the English language, it’s good to hear different voices.
